What is the Yasmin Ahmad Fund?
The Yasmin Ahmad Fund for Children was established in 2009 following the untimely demise of the legendary film director and producer Yasmin Ahmad. During her lifetime, Yasmin loved children and found comfort in their simplicity and honesty. The fund was initiated by her close relatives and relatives who wanted to maintain her legacy of inspiration, hope and creativity. 2019 marks the 10th anniversary of Yasmin’s passing, with various activities such as movie screenings, Japanese fan event and book sales being held in Malaysia and Japan recently to commemorate her work. The fund is MERCY Malaysia’s only fund dedicated to children.
What does the Fund support?
As children do not have a voice, the fund helps mobilise resources to keep them safe and nurtured in an increasingly complex world. The fund supports MERCY Malaysia’s children-related programmes in Malaysia and the region, such as build schools, raise health and oral awareness, and more.
Who has benefited from the Fund?
In the last 10 years, hundreds of children in crisis and non-crisis areas have benefitted from the fund directly or indirectly. Some examples are are providing stationery and furniture for a school in Cambodia, bringing dental health awareness and treatment to Orang Asli children, and building Child-Friendly Spaces (CFS) in disaster and conflict areas such as Bangladesh, Myanmar, Lombok and Palu.
Mercy Malaysia taught me on the role of NGO, to fill in the gaps in government efforts. It requires skillful volunteer, coordination and negotiation without compromising safety in humanitarian work. Procedure and control in place to ensure the best use of donation, to be accountable to stakeholders. To be sustainable, trainings are provided by Mercy as alternatives source of income to support their missions. All the best to Mercy and SimplyGiving in this fundraising :)
