Children who work in waste disposal, school is not a priority.

There are about 400 children who work as scavengers in Tamangapa, Makassar. They need to work to help their parents. Some of them do not go to school as they prefer to go to waste dumps to work. And some of them are still enrolled in schools but skip school for days even months.  

As they work in waste dumps every day, they have that particular smell that makes them being bullied when they go to school. It is not okay for them to be called as “scavengers”. In fact, they are ashamed when their friends make fun of their situations. That is the reason school is nightmare for them.

But education cannot either wait or stop. It is necessary for children’s future. Profession as scavenger is generally inherited, which was due to poverty. Low educational background was the root of the cycle.

Through our program Bring and Give Hope Outside of Trash (BRIGHT), Save the Children offers solution to ensure that children in dump site know they have future awaits. We have solutions by reducing their working hours in waste dumps by building Child Center. We also give financial training for parents, employability skill for the youth, as we also give protection to the children work in dump site.
