About Event

In Malaysia, out of 25,499 refugees under the age of 18, 70% do not receive proper education as there are no legal frameworks in place to address their situation.

"Light A Refugee's Dream" is a 4-week virtual volunteering project by AIESEC in Taylor's University. Aligned with the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), our project's aim is to provide quality education to refugee children by teaching them the basics of English, Mathematics, and Bahasa Malaysia.

This summer, we are collaborating with Warrior Bride Learning Centre, formerly known as MANNA House Learning Centre (MHLC) and Sudanese Refugees Representative Committee (SRRC). Warrior Bride and SRRC is an education centre in conjunction with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to cater for the education of refugee children from Myanmar and Sudan. Their families mostly fled from Myanmar and Sudan to escape persecution as well as poverty back in their homeland. The majority are registered with UNHCR Malaysia but as Malaysia is not a signatory to the UNHCR 1951 Refugee Convention, all refugees in the country are not accorded the proper basic rights.

In the case of the children, their basic right to formal education is denied. They are given access to education by concerned groups; mainly churches and NGOs.

Warrior Bride and SRRC has been deeply affected by Malaysia's Movement Control Order, and the children have to attend online classes with the limited resources and technological devices they have. As refugees, the children are currently located in high risk zones thus our goal for this campaign is to raise RM6000 for them to continue providing the students with their basic necessity- the rights to an education.

Furthermore, by having 30% of the fund, AIESEC in Taylor's University is able to continue the sustainability of this project to continue our semiannual initiative to raise awareness on refugee children's rights to an education.
