About Appeal

Sponsor a critically endangered Giant Ibis nest today and help protect Cambodia's national bird!

Costs only $8 per nest per day or $240 a month per nest to protect the most critically endangered birds in Cambodia.

The Bird Nest Protection Program was initiated by WCS and Government Partners in 2002 to locate, monitor, and protect globally threatened nesting sites. Under the program, local people and contracted community rangers are rewarded with ‘direct conservation payments’ to locate nests with a bonus if the nest successfully fledges within Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary and Chhep Wildlife Sanctuary. The community nest protectors are villagers that agree to participating in conservation agreements specifically to find, monitor and protect bird nests and not participate in illegal hunting activities in the protected area. 2 people per nest are selected based on their willingness to participate in the program and existing knowledge of the forest: many were previously hunters. The activities of the nest protectors are monitored by the WCS rangers. Nests are protected for between 2 and 6 months, depending on the nesting period of the species. Since the program’s inception a total of over 4,600 nests of ten threatened species have been protected, fledging 8,000 birds.
