Dear All
It is with a heavy heart that we must announce the unexpected passing away of Malaysia’s much loved Mr. Nellan Vellasamy, who was so much looking forward to seeing his biography, The Legend, printed and published in the next few weeks.
Our sincerest condolences are with his wife, three children and three grandchildren, his brothers and sisters and all family members.
Nellan will be missed by all who were touched by his humility, his humour and his magnetic personality, during his 50 year golfing career. People from all over the world have reacted with sadness to the news and his unique style will forever be seen in the swings of everyone he has taught over the years.
We have lost a true Malaysian Legend but we know Nellan would want us to get to the final putt by finishing and distributing his book as his legacy.
As such we are extending the fund-raising campaign in an effort to cover costs of production and to let everyone know that any surplus collected and profits from book sales will go directly to his lovely family.
If you can help it will be really appreciated, so please just click on the Donate Now button and follow the standard online payment instructions - should you so wish, you will be able to see your name and donation amount on the page.
Thank you
Mr.
Nellan Vellasamy
He caddied for prime ministers and gave lessons to kings; he survived a plane crash and cancer, having risen from nowhere to play for his country in two World Cups: no wonder they call him “The Legend”.
Nellan’s stories are legendary. Whether tall, outrageous or hilarious, they not only stand up, they tell the colourful history of golf over the past 50 years. He’s met the greats – Sarazen, Snead, Palmer, Player, Ballesteros. Non-golf celebs, too, from crooner Engelbert Humperdinck to cricketer Garry Sobers. How the eldest of 10 children to a caddy at RSGC – and whose first “club” was “a metal rod from scaffolding” - came to do all this is one for the ages.
From
caddying for 55 sen a round for Tunku Abdul Rahman, Lee Kuan Yew and Abdul
Razak to playing around the world, Nellan is proud to have won his very own
“Three Majors”: walking unscathed from the MAS Subang airport disaster of 1983,
beating colon cancer in 2007, and winning the Malaysian PGA in 1987.
A
chronic lack of tournaments in the region held his career back but it did not stop him
developing a huge repertoire of trick shots which enhanced his appeal as a sought-after
coach and much-loved personality. After a life-long association with RSGC,
Nellan is now an ambassador for Saujana G&CC and his teaching skills are
still in demand all over Asia. Above all, he is an ambassador par excellence for
the game of golf and one that should be properly celebrated with a permanent
memoir.
All donations collected will help to pay for the work required to get the book published and launched, so that Nellan can enjoy any surplus collected and ALL profits from book sales to help him through his old age, so please, if you could help this wonderful Golfing personality to reap some reward, no matter how modest, please donate so we can move to publishing asap. Please rest assured that ONLY Nellan will profit from this.
At the very least
the book will give Nellan some well deserved recognition as Malaysia's top
golf
personality.
We plan to launch the book by mid to end March and will update donors accordingly as we progress. We have been in discussion with Saujana Golf and Country Club Management who are kindly supporting our cause.
This SimplyGiving platform has been set up to allow ease of donating and transparency as well as enabling proper management of collections, If like us, you would like to help this lovely old character please donate any amount you feel comfortable with. My name is Colin and I have known Nellan for around 20 years. Some friends and I wish to help him, so this SimplyGiving fundraising page has been chosen as a suitable and transparent platform. I understand there are many deserving causes and I assure you Nellan, The Legend is one of them.
Deserving a lot more than he has
been dished out, our idea is to publish a book in the form of a biography of Nellan's life. Donations and book sales will provide him
with a nest egg to help him through his later years.
Nellan and I realised we had
a few common friends, when one day we met at a function in Indonesia. It is really a small
world. Following that trip we were pretty much always out and about together. On learning that he had Cancer, I pledged that I would help him to get
better any way I could. Not being able to play golf after his operation, Nellan became really depressed and started to
spiral into a large dark hole. At this point I promised him that if he was able to hit the
ball properly again and survive 18 holes at least 4 times per week, he'd get an all expenses paid trip to the British Open Golf Championship in the
UK. From that day he diligently began the long road to recovery, tirelessly but slowly
getting back in shape. Some friends and I helped him with financial assistance,
exercise regimes and due to his real determination to get well, we made the promised
trip to Turnberry in July 2009, around 2 years after his major operation. We were privileged to watch Tom Watson very nearly win the Open at 59 years of age.
Three weeks in the UK, followed by a Cambodia trip for his birthday and my good friend Nellan the Legend was finally back in the game. Age is now not on Nellan's side so having just turned 70, he is struggling to keep up with the ever rising cost of living. The book will be a very interesting read which I'm sure will raise some eyebrows and smiles from all; even non golfers, so please donate whatever you can.
Thank you
