About Appeal

Good Shepherd Learning Centre is a refuge for migrant kids in the Phuket community. As the ONLY resource for food and education for almost 200 children, their funds are running low and they are in danger of closing down. If this happens, the children (between the ages of 7 - 15) run a high risk of being exposed to drugs, prostitution and other rampant forms of exploitation.

We can't solve all their problems (though we wish we can), but what we can do is to help keep the centre open at merely USD 115.00 / RM 440.00 a day. Our target is to raise enough money to keep them open for the next 6 months, so any contributions big or small will go a long way!

To chip in, please click the "Donate Now" button to buy us and the children a little bit of time as we work on something more sustainable.

WHO NEEDS YOUR HELP?
For most of the 200 children at Good Shepherd Learning Centre (Phuket), the future is bleak. These sons and daughters of the migrant Myanmar community in Phuket have the odds stacked up against them as they do not have identification documents, proper schooling and safe lodgings. Unlike you and me, they are unable to plan for and decide on their future.

Their predicament stemmed from intentions that are not too different from ours - their parents just wanted to create a better future for themselves and their families. Unfortunately, their desperation were in turn exploited and they end up saddled with debt in a foreign country, in conditions that were no better than what they had left behind.

The children grow up in slums. They sleep in houses that are clumsily put together using scrap metal and pieces of wood. They play amongst boiling pots of water and piles of garbage. They drink tepid rainwater that had been collected from the previous days' rainfall. And this will continue because they simply do not have better options.

GOOD SHEPHERD LEARNING CENTRE PHUKET

Good Shepherd Learning Centre Phuket was established by a Good Shepherd Sister, Sister Lakana Sukhsuchit, with the hopes of giving these children a small shot at life.

The centre provides the children, aged 5-17, with basic education and for many, their only warm meal for the day. It is also a temporary refuge for the children, as it limits their exposure to the ever present vices and hazardous conditions that are rampant in the slums. Without the Centre as well, many of the children will be drafted by their parents to help out at the fish factories, to help their families earn extra income.

The Centre currently relies on funding from a local donor, but the funds will run dry come May 2018.

HOW MUCH DO THEY NEED?
The centre needs at least USD 115 / RM 440 a day to keep operating. This is the cost required to provide one simple lunch for all 200 children who attends the Learning Centre.

This excludes the administration costs and Teacher's salaries, which can run up to USD 1,290 / RM 5,000 per month.

As you can see, our top priority is to keep the meal services for the next 8 months. This is as Lunch, regarded by many of the children as their highlight, represents the one and only meal that they will get for the day.

Here are some of our milestones:

USD 2,300 / RM 8,800 - Centre stays open till end June (20 days)
USD 4,600 / RM 17,600 - Centre stays open till end July (40 days)
USD 6,900 / RM 26,400 - Centre stays open till end August (60 days)
USD 9,200 / RM 35,200 - Centre stays open till end Sept (80 days)
USD 11,500 / RM 44,000 - Centre stays open till end Oct (100 days)
USD 13,800 / RM 52,800 - Centre stays open till end Nov (120 days)
USD 16,100 / RM 61,600 - Centre stays open till end Dec (140 days)
     USD 18,400 / RM 70,400 - Centre stays open till Jan 2019 (160 days)

WHAT HAPPENS IF WE REACH THE TARGET?

We understand that this is by no means a sustainable plan. We are working with the centre to develop a longer-term funding strategy that is based on a self-sustaining model which will allow the centre to run independently without funders.
