A devastating wave of COVID-19 cases is battering Malaysia, leaving families and communities in desperate need of assistance. Cases continue to surge at unprecedented rates. The COVID-19 crisis is a children’s crisis. An estimated 1.5 million children worldwide have lost a parent, grandparent, or caregiver due to COVID-19: Throughout the world, children have become the hidden victims of the pandemic – pushed further into poverty, losing their education, facing heightened risk of abuse or exploitation, or experiencing the terror of seeing caregivers fall ill or die.

The effects on of the pandemic on the mental health of children and adolescents is a growing concern. From January 2019 up to May 2021, 872 young people took their own lives, representing more than half of the total 1,708 suicide cases recorded during these five months.
UNICEF in Malaysia has been working tirelessly since the start of the pandemic to help tackle the impact of the virus and the measures taken to manage it. UNICEF is implementing programmes to help children and families cope in addition to supporting the national vaccine rollout.
UNICEF Malaysia is going to provide essential oxygen concentrators, and other life-saving supplies to healthcare systems to fight COVID-19 now.
