About Appeal

Hey everyone!

This is a story about Mohd Kamil Affendy's journey, or more fondly known as Eddie.

My name is Marlene, and i will try my best to share Eddie's story with you. I'm writing this as of 08/05/2021 11pm and I suspect I may not be able to complete the story until tomorrow due to multiple work and family commitment, so please bear with me.

How did I get to know Eddie?

I started a facebook group called Mental Care Community Malaysia (previously named as Covid Care Community Malaysia) while driving to work to deliver Mental Health First Aid Course to university students in Perth early morning on 17 March 2020, the day before the first PKP. I was deeply concerned with how Covid-19 situation can place immense pressure on the mental health of many Malaysians, and felt that it would be amazing if we could reach out and assist those in need. My intention to start up the group was simple, to connect and assist, through posts that encourage positivity, sharing stories of random act of kindness and creative ways to help Malaysians in need. I believe that we are all in this together, and we can make a difference in each other's life, a better one in fact. The group name was renamed in July 2020, to focus on mental health awarness.

In end of December, Eddie joined the group and few days after, posted - "I hampir nekad nak bunuh diri".
It was a cry for help, with many subsequent posts of suicidal thoughts...along with sharing of his other medical conditions, his life with his elderly mother and a huge number of rescued cats and kittens. While many empathised, there were also few that mocked his honesty with his suicidal thoughts and called up his behaviour as attention seeking. There were also some who would DM him unfriendly comments.
The lack of mental health awareness, literacy and acceptance was appalling.
I reached out to Eddie, publicly and privately, and build rapport to support him remotely.
Slowly, in the next few months, through few Zoom sessions, i learnt about his life and story, and was shocked by the amount of trauma he has faced growing up, and the discrimination and bias he received as a person with mental illness.

However, little did we both know, things will only get worst....Eddie will be hit with his worst challenge in life, which will further push him to the brink of helplessness and hopelessness.

To be continued.....(as of 08/05/2021 1130pm)

(Thank you so much for reading to this point. If you would like to support Eddie, please consider donating, and/or sharing this fund raising page. Every little effort means a lot to him and his mother)
