Gawad Kalinga

“Gawad Kalinga,” translated in English means to “give care”, is a Philippine-‐ based movement whose main strategy is to mobilize and engage all sectors of society to work together in ending poverty. It offers a concrete solution to the overwhelming problem of poverty through a community development template that has values-‐formation at its core and employs an integrated and holistic approach to empowerment with special focus on restoring the dignity and productivity of the poor. Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation, Inc. (GK), established in 2003, began its work as early as 1994 in Bagong Silang, Caloocan City, the biggest squatters relocation site in Metro Manila. Since then it has expanded its work to over 2,000 organized communities and has been adopted in other developing nations like Cambodia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. It is also in the forefront of peace-‐building work in conflict areas in Mindanao and reconstruction work in post-‐disaster communities. In the Philippines, GK is present in almost every province, and promotes public-‐private sector collaboration to help implement its programs for community infrastructure, child and youth development, health, food sufficiency, productivity and environment. It recognizes that poverty in the Philippines and throughout the world is massive in scope and depth, and requires nothing less than a heroic response in people to truly make a difference. It continues to rally all sectors of society to help achieve its GK2024 vision to end poverty for 5 million poor families by year 2024. The Foundation, as well as its Founder and Chairman, Antonio "Tony" Meloto, are 2006 Ramon Magsaysay Awards Foundation (RMAF) Awardees for Community Leadership. On the global stage, Tony Meloto and GK's Executive Director Jose Luis Oquiñena are both recipients of the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship for 2012.
