At Lions Befrienders, our seniors’ quality of life is of utmost importance to us. We aim to alleviate social isolation amongst our seniors, whilst empowering them to live independently as valued members of our community. We provide friendship and care for seniors to age in place with dignity and community participation, enabling them to enjoy meaningful and enriching lives during their golden years. Close to 90% of the 5,000 seniors we serve live in one/two-room rental flats with little or no family support.
Since inception in 1995, we have served more than 17,000 seniors with the help of more than 3,000 trained volunteers. According to the Singapore Department of Statistics, by 2030 about one in four residents would be 65 years or older and the number of elderly people living alone is likely to increase to 83,000, up from 35,000 now. Hence we are looking to run new services and more eldercare facilities in the near future.
Befriending ServicesOur island-wide befriending services reaches out to seniors who are at risk of social isolation. Trained volunteers provide social and psycho-emotional support to seniors through weekly home visits. Seniors aged 65 years old and above with limited or no family support are eligible for the service at no charge. The aim is to help them age in place within the community and alleviate them from loneliness and social isolation.
We believe in facilitating the integration of lonely seniors within their neighbourhoods so that they may age in place with grace and dignity. We manage 7 Senior Activity Centres (SACs) that provide a wide array of meaningful activities and courses free-of-charge or at heavily subsidised rates to seniors.
The Cluster Support is a step-up service for vulnerable seniors with no or weak family support, so that they can age-in-place within the community for as long as possible. They help to closely monitor the well-being of seniors from identified service boundaries through collaborations with social service agencies and the help of Caring Assistance from Neighbours (CAN) carers. We also refer seniors to relevant social service agencies where necessary.
(Senior Group Homes)
