In the photo above, we see Grace and her two children, Jabez (aged 4) and Priscilla (aged 7).
Not pictured with them is their father, John, who has been arrested and detained by Malaysian police under suspicions of his identity as an illegal immigrant in March 2020.
Grace and John, who are currently under an asylum-seeking status with the UNHCR have called Malaysia their home for the past 8 years. John is a missionary, pastoring Myanmar refugees in a church in Subang Jaya. To this day, Grace and her children remain uncertain about their father's imminent return. This brings significant uncertainty to this young family both emotionally and financially. With the absence of the breadwinner of the family, Grace has to juggle a part-time job earning a meagre monthly RM 600 alongside caring for her two children, of which is only sufficient to cover 2/3 of her monthly rental expenses, excluding expenses for food and monthly bills.
Whilst Jabez and Priscilla have thankfully been covered by means-based scholarships for school, Grace still grapples with the pressure of bringing food to the table and covering miscellaneous expenses for her growing children.
For this family, uncertainty is looming.
