About Appeal

Short Summary

My name is Sulaiman B. Amir, the current Chairman of Kekal Asli Tigabu (previously Kelab Belia Tigabu), a small community-based organisation located in Tigabu Island, Sabah, Malaysia; a remote island near the Philippines Border. Our main goal is to save every single turtle nests at Tigabu-Mantabuan-Kukuban-Tibakan Island Complex and to date since 2017 we have secured more than 100 turtle nests and released thousands of turtle hatchlings. But today, we are not going to talk about the turtles. This appeal is about our community survival against the impacts of the global pandemic; COVID-19. Together with our village leaders and the technical support from other NGOs like WWF-Malaysia, we seek donations and other kinds of support from all kind-hearted people out there via crowdfunding platform! #KitaJagaKita which simply means We Take Care of Each Other is our main mission in this.

What We Need From You, Kind-Hearted People

Yes, Covid-19 is contagious, and so do kindness!

Our rapid census identified 130 households with most are living below the poverty line. Amongst these households, 26 are single mothers, 3 differently-abled persons and almost all depend on marine resources as their source of livelihood. Based on our discussion with village leaders, we decided to raise a small sum of MYR5,500 for this phase. #KitaJagaKita

Details of Target Amount:-
Grocery Aid for 130 households (including Transportation cost ):

MYR5,500 (or USD1,262) or MYR43/household (or USD9.20/household)

Tigabu Island is about 2 hours boat journey (40hp) from the nearest city, Kudat, Sabah, Malaysia

What We Hope To Achieve Through This Initiative

  • 130 households receive grocery aid which we hope can ease at least one-month of food supplies
  • Togetherness spirit amongst communities are further strengthened #KitaJagaKita
  • More trust in the village leadership and an increase in credibility for our turtle conservation community-based organisation in our own village

Risks & Challenges

Weather has always been one issue that is quite challenging. High waves and storm sometimes happen especially at this time of South West Monsoon season. However, to lower our risk while transporting the grocery aids is to rent a fit vessel that can withstand the unpredictable weather. At the same time, we will always do careful monitoring of the weather and will not take risk to go ahead if the weather is very bad.
