Who we areWe are students who attend JEMS Character Academy and we are in the Red Level (P3 students). "We are a place that changes people's minds," says Archibald, a student in Red Level. "We go to different activities to help the elderly and disabled people." We focus on learning about character. Some things we learn about include perseverance, responsibility, empathy, and compassion. Why we careIn Hong Kong, a lot of children have different disabilities. Some children may believe that they cannot do anything because they have a physical disability. We want them to know that being different is okay and that they can do anything. We want to create a webpage to help more people know this about people with physical disabilities and so we can help people with physical disabilities have confidence and the resources to overcome their obstacles. Our SolutionIf we all work together and learn truly what the people in poverty are facing, we can understand how to help and will then know how to care for people in poverty without causing hurt. Getting to know others and starting to build a relationship is the first step to empathising with others. We believe this is what is needed.Who we want to support and why - SRDC (The Society for the Relief of Disabled Children).SRDC is an organization in Hong Kong that helps disabled children. They see someone with a physical disability and they help them get what they need to get stronger until they're strong and can do things by themselves. They help people get better, provide them with equipment, and help them become more confident. They also educate other kids letting them know that being different is okay. They show them that we can talk to people with physical disabilities. The Society for the Relief of Disabled Children promotes awareness of equality and freedom from discrimination in the community, improving the children’s physical health by sponsoring medical, surgical and rehabilitation services and caring for their psychological wellbeing and mental mindset and by empowering them with love and care. Our fundraising goalWe want to raise $10,000 HKD to help SRDC help more children with physical disabilities and tell more kids in Hong Kong about children with physical disabilities and how being different is okay.More about our other projectsJEMS Character Academy was founded in 2009 and is an after-school learning centre with a vision to see children become junior excellent members of society. With a belief that education goes beyond transferring knowledge and skills, JEMS provides children with Character Education programmes throughout the year.   As a part of encouraging students to give back to the community, it is JEMS' hope that students will grow in their empathy and compassion for different needs in our city through the unique JEMS curriculum where students are encouraged to make a difference in the lives of others. As a result, students across various school levels have chosen to start a campaign to fundraise for different charities that help and support some of the needs in Hong Kong.

On Saturday 7th 2018, Team Zwift Madness and a couple of others are attempting to climb the height of Mt. Everest (8,848m or more! ) in a continuous virtual cycling relay on Zwift (www.zwift.com) for the Society for the Relief of Disabled Children. Please give generously!. What’s Everesting? The concept of Everesting is simple: Pick any hill, anywhere in the world and bicycle repeats of it in a single activity until you climb 8,848m – the equivalent height of Mt Everest. A virtual Everesting is the same thing but the bicycle is placed on a stationary trainer where the resistance of the bike increases/decreases to simulate the climb/descent of a hill. This stationary bike is then linked up to an App which displays on the TV in front of you and provides you a virtual cycle ride and therefore gives you a simulated ‘road ride’ experience.     So how’s this going to work? We are going to attempt to complete this virtual Everesting in 20 hours on 7th July in a continuous relay. We will do this alongside other teams (please visit their pages and donate as well – see links below) to have some company and friendly competition. To make it more fun, we will do this in the Virtual Cycling world of ZWIFT which allows all teams to ride at the same time on screen, much like multiple players in an arcade car game! The more team members, the less the distance/time each person needs to ride. We will ride for the full 20 hours regardless of how well we do to see just what elevation we can achieve. To reiterate, an Everesting is not just riding 8.8km vertically! As an example, to achieve 8848m of elevation on the road, it would involve cycling up and down Tai Mo Shan 10 times! This means that the team will need to ride well over 200kms in the day.     Everesting Explained. It does not matter how long the ride takes, but it must be ridden in one attempt (i.e. no sleeping in between). Breaks for meals etc. are fine. You can break for as long or as little as you like. Bear in mind break times add up quickly, and can add significantly to your elapsed time. Single Climb. Rides can be of any length, on any hill or mountain within the Zwift framework. Essentially anything that has a vertical gain can be used to complete an vEveresting. Rides must only focus on one hill or mountain per ride.  You cannot ride different routes on the same mountain. If there are 4 routes, that means there are 4 possible ‘vEverestings’ (think of it like the North and South face of Everest). – Rides cannot be loops. The descent must be via the same road. Rides must be full ascents each time. You can’t commit to a combination of full and half laps within the one vEveresting attempt.   Visit https://everesting.cc/ for the official rules and more incredible stories. Location: Crossfit Asphodel generously lets us use their facility for the whole day.  They are an awesome team of expert coaches actually the only official Reebok affiliated gym in town so check out their fantastic training facilities in Kennedy Town. http://crossfitasphodel.com/

On the 7th July, we will be attempting a most difficult challenge yet - EVERESTING! 20 hours of continuous cycling in a team relay, we will cycle a stimulated hill on a smart trainer (using Zwift), until we have climbed the equivalent vertical ascent to Mt. Everest - 8,848m or more! that will be around ~250 kms of cycling. Some of us are just weekend warriors, and some do not ride a bike, but we all brave this challenge to raise funds for the most vulnerable in the society - disabled children. It will be grueling physically and mentally,  but we all brace it for a good cause. 100% of the donation will go to the Society for the Relief of Disabled Children. Please give generously!
