When the two massive earthquakes and multiple aftershocks struck south-east Türkiye and Syria, I was shocked, and speechless seeing numerous footage of children and the people of Türkiye and Syria, under the rubble, trapped, and others including children and their families in danger. According to UNICEF, 41,000 death toll is recorded in total at this point. While the exact number of children impacted is unknown, 5.4 million children in Turkiyë districts are impacted, while more than 2.5 million children are also affected in Syria. Numerous people have lost their houses and are currently staying in makeshift shelters, often in extreme cold with rain and snow intensifying their suffering. The well-being of children and families is further jeopardised by the massive damage that the earthquakes have done to schools and other essential facilities. Access to safe water and sanitation, and the health needs of the affected population, are also major concerns.For my birthday this year instead of gifts and cakes, I would like to celebrate my birthday by fundraising for Turkiyë and Syria. I haven't really celebrated my birthday in years ever since junior high school. Partially because of the so-called ‘birthday celebration tradition’ in the boarding school which was honestly just another form of bullying that made me want to be invisible or hide out somewhere on my birthday. So I grew up hating the attention that I never even bothered to tell people it was my birthday (most of the time I just forget my own birthday). The worst part is when I eventually find everyone's birthday insignificant. At times, I feel guilty for feeling this way when my loved ones and close friends want to celebrate, and I just want to avoid these kinds of celebrations. The few times it's happened, it was seriously a case of pasting on a happy face and toughing it out, and being relieved as hell when it was over. I thought it was just the way I’m put together but little that I know that they are the result of a decade of ingrained defence mechanisms and survival practices. Childhood bullying leaves deep scars and recovery is not a quick process, especially if we did not deal with the bullying when it occurred. Too often, bullying is not taken seriously and is treated as a normal rite of passage. It's time for us to move away from any perception that bullying is just an inevitable part of growing up, but a significant disadvantage in childhood that can have life-long consequences. Just because people can make lemonade out of lemons, it doesn’t mean that bullying is a good thing. Even those who are able to see the positive side of having been bullied often had other negative ramifications. While programs to stop bullying are important, teachers, parents and policymakers need to focus efforts on early intervention among children to prevent problems caused by bullying from persisting into adolescence and adulthood. My time as an intern at UNICEF Malaysia, has opened up my eyes to UNICEF's commitment to protecting children from all forms of violence and bullying as well as supporting their mental and psychosocial well-being. Turning 24 this year, I decided to overcome my birthday blues by doing something meaningful. According to an estimation made by World Health Organization (WHO) in 2019, around 7.4 million children under the age of 15 died due to preventable or treatable causes such as starvation, diseases and even abusement. The child mortality rate in Malaysia is also increasing. We realise that most of these cases are due to financial problems faced by the children’s household. Thus, we decided to organize a fundraising to collect donations for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Malaysia to help unfortunate and impoverished children. We sincerely hope that everyone can support our initiative by donating to UNICEF Malaysia. As Aesop, a Greek fabulist once said “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted”.

We are students from Tunku Abdul Rahman College(TARC) penang branch that are currently studying in Diploma in Computer Science (DCS) from the tutorial group DCS2 and we will be organizing a fund-raising event for unicef Malaysia.Our initial target is RM 500. We think this amount is justifiable as many people are going through difficult times due to the COVID-19 pandemic where a lot of people has lost their jobs and are in need of help in terms of food and daily necessities. Even though COVID-19 pandemic has made our country economically unstable, we still believe there is a lot of good hearts out there that will help us in achieving our target fund.We chose Unicef Malaysia instead of another international/local organization is because we passionately believe that unicef has what it takes to help our country with the ongoing COVID-19. Unicef Malaysia has been operating since 1954 which proves that the organization is experienced in a variety of situations. Based on the annual review provided by unicef they have managed to procured more than 3.486 billion. Around 183.9 million is used for nutrition supplies where the rest of the amount is used for pharmaceuticals,vaccines and education supplies. As the current pandemic is related to Medical & Health, we firmly believe that by hosting a charity fund for unicef Malaysia, we will be able to help those in need. Furthermore, we chose unicef Malaysia because they regularly update their main Web Page as well as constantly gave report about the ongoing current issue. As an example unicef Malaysia recently release a report about impact of COVID-19 crisis on women and children in low income urban families in Malaysia.

From the eyes of an educator, sights of children in the streets are an anomaly during the school days. We are used to seeing them inside classrooms, not on the streets. The classroom is where they should be, but instead, reports of children begging on the streets are widespread. Before this, I thought: aren’t they supposed to be in school? But now I know what has caused them to be in such conditions - they’re victims of systemic discrimination, a system that doesn’t allow the undocumented to enter schools. Whether we are educators or not, we all believe that every child has the right to education - no matter whether they’re citizens or stateless. These children were born here in the state of Sabah, yet they were never given the proper documents due to current immigration laws and policies. With approximately 50,000 stateless children in the state of Sabah alone, these children are now undeniably a part of society that form an important part of Sabah. By the time that they receive the proper documentation, they would have already missed out a large portion of their education journey.

I am John from Sarawak.From knowing little about education to completing a Research-based Master's, I realised that education is for everyone regardless of their social status. Despite financial difficulties, I beefed up my courage - walking from door to door, ringing the bells, to express my research interests and fundraising goals to every household and company, together with my family. At the end of my 9-month fundraising journey, I learned that perseverance was the key - I was notified by one of the sponsors that I was awarded a fully-funded scholarship to pursue my dream!
