Almost 4,000 children in Hong Kong live in institutional care, with hundreds more without safe, loving, and permanent homes. The longer a child lives without a family, the more detrimental it can be to their development.A recent study from Bain & Company conservatively estimated that the majority of the 7,000 crisis pregnancies in Hong Kong each year are single girls are under the age of 25. Their passion to provide loving, non-judgmental support to the many pregnant teenagers who had no one else to turn to quickly expanded to providing nurturing care to children without families, and to be a voice for them to be in a family. At any time, almost 4,000 children live apart from their families due to a number of reasons, including neglect, abuse, violence in the home, abandonment, economic hardship, and incarceration.

Thank you for clicking to this page. Mothers choice is a charity very close our hearts. We aim to share with you our stories below: 'A vicious cycle' by Marc Growing up in South Africa, I saw abject poverty. The contrast between the haves and have-nots could not have been more starker – something that was not lost on me. It is ingrained in you from a very young age and you quickly realise that the world is not a fair place. Recognizing this helped me develop a mindset to be grateful for what we have and to not only help others in need but also help others help themselves. My interest in Mother’s Choice started with learning about the challenges that some mothers in Hong Kong face. I thought, “How could the mothers find themselves in this situation? What has happened in society that has allowed this to occur?”I could rationalise the situation in Africa because of limited education and means. The cycle of poverty begins with young girls not being able to get education, know nothing about life, getting  pregnant very young and forced to do anything that can to survive – so begins the the vicious cycle from which they are unlikely to ever break out. But then you come to a place like Hong Kong – a rich city – yet women still find themselves on the streets and you understand that there is this complicated, cultural dimension – like what blood means in Chinese families. It is a very different situation. Why does Hong Kong feel so third world and why is society HERE struggling with this vicious cycle? It was only way much later that I actually began to think about the children. Babies are the outcome of a broken paradigm, and that goes back to how life is unfair.   Marc Love goes both ways by Erin Volunteering at Mother’s Choice is rewarding – it is the gift that keeps on giving. The reward starts the moment I walk into a room full of smiling babies, gurgling their welcome and greeting me with open arms. Mother’s Choice creates an environment that allows volunteers and babies to be at ease with each other.  There is a saying that to give better than to receive.  But my experience at Mother’s Choice has shown me a deeper revelation that to give is to receive.  Love goes both ways; I have simultaneously given of myself and received abundantly at Mother’s Choice. Erin

We wish you all love on Mother’s Day. Whether you’re celebrating with your mum, being pampered by your children, preparing to embark on the journey of motherhood. Or you’re remembering the mother gone, the child lost, the child you hoped for. We wish you love. As many of you know, Harj and I firmly advocate for the safety and wellbeing of all children. For reasons I won’t go into, writing a story about young girls and babies in crisis has been particularly hard for me this week, but I was driven to do so by a feeling of immense gratitude for the work that Mother’s Choice, a Hong Kong charity, does to give family and the hope of a better future to vulnerable girls and children. Just thinking about what so many of these girls have been through or what their babies may go through without the charity’s support brings me to tears. Now Mother’s Choice needs help to continue their work. Their Patron Mrs Purviz Shroff who has risen from tragedy to be a mother figure to thousands is calling on us all to shine our light to see young people in personal crisis through the global crisis. This Mother’s Day till Father’s Day, we’re asking our family members, friends and colleagues around the world to join us to support Mrs Shroff’s initiative and help girls and babies in need. You can read about them here:  https://www.scmp.com/lifestyle/health-wellness/article/3083353/answering-pregnant-teens-calls-help-huge-rise-serviceWe are grateful for any amount you can give to Mother’s Choice at this time. And we are grateful that we can call on our family in good times and bad. With love from our family to yours.

(中文翻译再往下滑)i'm 20!going into Official Adulthood during 2020 when everything seems to be going to shit is an... interesting experience. while 2020 has been a terrible year on many accounts, many recent global events (hk, BLM, Lebanon, etc) has also taught me to recognize my privilege and the many blessings that i have in my life, and has taught me to think of the world outside of myself. which is why i decided that i would like my friends and family to donate to Mother's Choice Hong Kong in lieu of giving me gifts this year. let's make the world a better place for others!Mother's Choice is a local charity based in Hong Kong. it cares for children without families, and also provides adoption/fostering services so that these children can find loving and permanent homes. it also services pregnant teenagers so they can make informed choices for themselves and their babies, including a hotline, a counseling service, and a hostel. they also do sex education workshops to better prevent single teenage pregnancy and crisis pregnancy. my choice to support Mother's Choice is three-fold. first, as a newly-minted young woman, i want to put my support to helping young girls and feminist/women-oriented charities. Mother's Choice helps young women going through pregnancy/motherhood without the proper resources or support system. feminism– we love to see it, and we love to support it. second, one of the things i am fully appreciative of is that i have a wonderful, loving, and permanent family. my parents (and my sister- hi 姐姐 <3) have provided fundamental building blocks for me that allow me to reach my full potential. this is something that i often take for granted, and i want to make a difference for vulnerable children placed in institutional care so they can find permanent and loving homes. third, hk is #homekong, which is why i want to support local hong kong charities that directly benefit hk communities.if you want to learn more about Mother's Choice, you can click through https://www.motherschoice.org/en/. my goal is to raise HKD1500, which supports 3 children with monthly personalized therapy, or protects the health of 5 pregnant teens through pre-natal classes, or gives 17 foster/adoptive families with a monthly care group. alternatively, if there's a charity that you're also really passionate about that you want to donate to in lieu of gifts for me, you are welcome to do so! thank you for supporting me, and for your birthday wishes!love, abbie //我20岁啦!2020年,一个非常时期,也是我正式成为一个“大人”的一年。 Abbie

Three brave nine year old girls - Charlie, Jem and Kez - and their equally earnest eight year old brothers, Jacob and Michael, and refusing-to-be-the-baby-because-he's-already six years old, Kai, have trained tirelessly for many weeks to complete an almost 4km open water swim in support of Mother's Choice. The adventure will start precisely at 6.30am on Saturday, 30 May 2020; the ambitious route will begin at Deep Water Bay, go around Middle Island, and back to Deep Water Bay beach. The kids voluntarily committed - not coerced! - to swim continuously and without external help, but should they be occasionally towed by their Baywatch fathers - Tim and Rob - we trust you will allow for the momentary rest.Charlie, Jacob, Jem, Kai, Kez, Jacob and Michael are swimming for their favourite charity, Mother's Choice.  Like many NGOs, Mother's Choice operations have been adversely impacted by COVID-19. Meanwhile, their services are needed more than ever to protect and support vulnerable members of our Hong Kong community: at-risk children without families, and pregnant teenagers. Your financial support for Mother's Choice is greatly appreciated for our six amphibious fundraisers!

COVID-19 has had significant impact on our services and operations. We’ve had an 80% increase in calls to our emergency hotline, and there are hundreds of children on the waitlist for a safe and temporary place to stay as at-risk families in Hong Kong face even more hardship.  Despite these challenges, Mother’s Choice has remained committed to global best practice and protecting our vulnerable children. This includes:Being one of the few residential homes still admitting in children.Working closely with the Hospital Authority to provide resources for the surge of young girls seeking help with a crisis pregnancy.Sourcing and providing protective gear for hundreds of immune-suppressed children.Supporting struggling foster families with limited resources who are not able to support schooling.Despite these urgent needs, we are unable to hold the Mother’s Choice gala dinner as planned in May due to the concerns around COVID-19.

I'm raising money for a fantastic charity in Hong Kong that supports children, young mothers and children without families. In Hong Kong, one of the richest cities in the world, one in five children lives in poverty, with one in three children going without three meals a day. It's estimated that almost 4,000 children are living without families in Hong Kong.Your donation will help to change the life stories of children without families. Mothers Choice run a care home for up to 32 babies and 12 children with special needs serving over 100 children each year. They also manage a foster care service, connecting and nurturing volunteer families to children in need of temporary care while they wait to join their permanent family. They also offer loving and non-judgmental support to pregnant teenagers, empowering each girl with comprehensive information on all the choices available to her (parenting, adoption, termination), and to equip her to face the future of her choice. Their goal is to see every child in a safe, loving, and permanent family, to ensure that every child can either be reunited with their birth family, or join an adoptive family as soon as possible.
