I was the girl who skived the school cross country race...My story with running only started about 3 years ago, in my late 30s, living a sedentary lifestyle, I couldn't manage 5 minutes of running without feeling dizzy or sick! I downloaded the Couch to 5km app and started running (very occasionally). Failing to achieve the 5km in 8 weeks, I began thinking this running malarkey is not for me, I hung up the trainers. Fast forward 1 year, in 2020, COVID hits, we are all locked in, 30 mins of exercise became a sanctuary between work and home-schooling and I started running once a week. Finally, in June 2020, I managed my first 5km, hurrah! Then in August 2020, we moved to Malaysia. Running stopped, schools are still closed here, not working, stuck in a situation where I have little focus, feeling homesick, not getting anywhere with job searches because the main thing I needed to do was help my youngest daughter with her home-schooling, cook dinner, stay healthy, and repeat... My mental health was struggling with the open-endedness of it all. The Malaysian dream (the kids being in school, me getting to use my Ph.D. knowledge and skills in an exciting new job) was all beginning to feel like an endurance test of my patience and self-worth. COVID-19 was here to stay and one year in Malaysia and I am still not working and schools are still closed. I have found that running has given me a focus to get up before the kids.   In the UK I could run anytime, mid-day, mid-afternoon, just whenever. Here it gets scorching by 9 am. Running in 32 – 35 degrees is not fun. It was way too hot if I attempted running between 9am – 6.30pm. But I persevered with running in the constant humidity and experimented with the best times to run. I found that squeezing a run-in before sunrise was the only way. I am now managing about 2-3 runs a week and 5km is my minimum amount for each run. I have decided that the only way I am going to manage long-distance running is if I have a new motivator and focus... so although I am bricking it, I have signed up for the Virtual Kuala Lumpur Half Marathon race (gulp). I will be running 21.1km on the 28th November 2021. The furthest I have managed to run is around 13km. So this is really going to test my running ability. Why Women's Aid Organisation Malaysia? As a feminist and someone passionate about gender-based equalities, I've always felt very lucky that I had a couple of very supportive family members when I was growing up. In my culture boys are favoured over girls. I know this is the case in many cultures and parts of the world. As a girl child, I was exposed to lots of positive experiences many girls wouldn't have been. Now, being a mother of two girls, it really hits home when I learn about many challenges girls and women are facing even now in the 21st century. Gender-based inequalities are rife all over the world, and each country deals with its own gender-based inequalities differently but the problem is real, it is there. Since the pandemic, it has worsened. For example, in the UK, since COVID-19 hit, domestic violence cases have surged and so has the sexual abuse of girls. Here in this part of the world, domestic violence on women and girls has also grown. But also worryingly, unequal access to education is also surfacing, schools are closed, so poorer families who are reliant on technology for home learning, are struggling because they simply don’t have the equipment. Making it further challenging for girls as there is no encouragement for girls to gain an education anyway, so COVID-19 has just intensified the problem. Many girls are simply dropping out of education and I read somewhere, many girls won’t return to education after the pandemic. This is scary and very sad. Adolescent girls are being married off earlier to save their parents the hassle of having one extra stomach to feed. Sexual harassment continues… the list is long, uncomfortable, and needs fixing. But social change takes time, education, and resources. Women’s Aid Organisation is a non-government, non-religious organisation and it offers women and children practical help. They are also researching all of these issues and others to help get to the root of the problem. The donation you make will go a long way towards the COVID-19 shortfall they are experiencing currently. Thank you for reading my story, think of me on the 28th November(!) and at the same time please help to raise money for this wonderful organisation working towards gender-based equalities and social change.

I work with children as my profession. It’s very heartbreaking for me to see them being deprived of a wholesome and nurturing childhood - which plays a role in their character formation.A confident adult comes from a safe, secure and loving childhood. We can’t right the wrong, but we can at least reduce its negative impact.

Movement Control Order (MCO) is implemented in Malaysia. This leads to the dramatic rise in domestic violence cases as coronavirus curbs trap victims under the same roof as abusers. So, we students from University Malaya would collaborate with the Women's Aid Organisation (WAO) to conduct an online fundraising campaign to raise at least RM500 of funds for WAO

This year, birthday celebrations are different altogether due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For my 20th birthday (October 6th), I have decided to set up a fundraiser page for one of the groups of the Joint Action Group for Gender Equality. The Women's Aid Organisation/Pertubuhan Pertolangan Wanita advocates for gender equality and the protection of women against domestic violence. I am a strong supporter of WAO's advocacy towards changing the education system to promote gender equality. This past summer, I had a particularly bad experience being discriminated against. The most baffling thing was that everyone else had accepted this behaviour as a 'norm', but I refuse to. It made me realise that gender discrimination has seeped itself into every aspect of life, from home to the workplace to our educational institutions. It is integrated into the backbones of our society, and it will take a massive effort to remove its roots from our institutions.Supporting these organisations will not erase inequality overnight, but I hope that this fundraiser brings awareness to the organisations that challenge the deeply rooted discrimination that exists in our society. I am fortunate that I can publicly declare my support for these organisations on an online platform without any backlash.  Think about the victims suffering quietly because they are intimidated by their partners, families and friends to speak out. But I shouldn't say that I'm fortunate for not having been a victim of domestic violence. I cannot be fortunate when it is a human right to be treated with equal worth and respect, of which we all should be entitled to. By supporting WAO, we can support them.Any form of support, whether through donations or sharing this on your social media, would truly make this the best birthday celebration I could ever receive.

While the MCO and Covid-19 have forced many of us to start working from home and spending more time in the safety of our own homes, there are many for whom home is not a safe space. For those facing domestic violence, the MCO and lockdown has left them with no other option than to stay home with their attackers. In the first half of April alone, the WAO recorded a 111.2% increase in domestic violence cases. The WAO Emergency COVID-19 Fund will be used for the following:Food and non-food items for women and children throughout the COVID-19 periodVolunteer hotline mobilisation cost - Stipend for our volunteers as WAO services extended to 24 hour supportUtilitiesGrab delivery servicesShelter support - WAO's shelter is at maximum capacity, and they are funding alternative safe spaces Social work and case management - continued throughout MCO period as Emergency Protection Orders (EPOs) and Interim Protection Orders (IPOs) are required during this stageMedical aid and legal aidCounselling and psychosocial supportSurvivor empowerment programmes via online platformsThe WAO is working hard to create access to safe spaces for survivors as many shelters are at maximum capacity, and are exploring setting up temporary shelters to support those who need a safe refuge away from domestic violence.

UNMC Feminist Society is a special-interest society established in the year 2015, at The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) that organizes educational talks, critical awareness campaigns on issues pertaining to women’s rights, women’s empowerment, and equality of the sexes on a university level including staff and students. Based in Semenyih, UNMC Feminist Society endeavours to create safe spaces to discuss about the critical issues facing Malaysia relating to gender equality, in terms of harmful stereotypes and problems such as domestic violence, consent and sexual harassment. Our society has previously worked with Women’s Aid Organization (WAO), inviting speakers to talk about domestic violence; Projek Dialog, inviting speakers to discuss about the current status of gender equality as well as the progress made in Malaysia. We work hard to ensure our fellow students and staff have the opportunity to listen and actively participate in critical discussions as we believe that everyone is an agent of change. Our motto that we believe in is a simple equality: Awareness + Action = Social Change.

High Heel Dash -- Malaysia's First Ever High Heel Run! (If i wear wedges does it count?!?) Hi!  I'm Nadine Ann Thomas. For 5 years now I have worked with many women's organizations on various issues including abuse, gender discrimination and equality, bullying and women-related cancer.  One of the most tragic situations a woman or a mother can be put through in her lifetime is to be homeless, helpless and powerless. When a woman's basic human right is robbed from her and she is subjected to physical abuse or worse still, mental abuse; that leaves no mark, yet lasts a lifetime. I believe it is my duty and perhaps you will feel it is also yours, to uplift, inspire and help care for those who need mending. Women's Aid Organisation (WAO) is raising funds to refurbish safe homes that have been hidden and designated for women and children who need protection, shelter, and comfort. With a growing number of over 300 occupants that include women and children, WAO needs to expand and refurbish to accommodate and help more women and children in need. Your donations will be used to buy the basics, beds, cupboards, mattresses and more. Join me in helping women and children in need. Help them to heal and rebuild.  Have a wonderful day ahead and I thank you in advance for your support. :D  Love,Nadine Miss Universe Malaysia 2010 | DJ | Host
