I love running, swimming and cycling in that order for sports.  I picked up running two years ago and never looked back.  From there, I moved on to try obstacle course, competitive swimming and picking up on cycling. Early November, I fell while riding and fractured two vertebrae, compressing L1 by 20 percent, ie crushed and reduced the vertebrae height.  I've signed up for the Performance Series 10 km, hoping to break my 1:01 hr for 10 km.  Unfortunately this is now beyond my ability (at this point).  I will attempt to run however for this last race for 2016 and hope to get your support for SAMH - focusing on mental health.  Thank you.  (I have since completed the race with net timing of 1:09.)

Hi! I'm a watercolour artist and have been running for over 1 year now. I will be taking part in the 10km performance series race at Bedok Reservoir.  Join me in support of Singapore Association of Mental Health (SAMH). Previously, I have donated my artworks to SAMH for fundraising charity auction and this time, I'm hopeful to do the same through running 10km.

Just started running and decided if I'm running, it might as well be for a good cause. Had a choice between Breast Cancer Foundation or the Singapore Association for Mental Health (SAMH) and decided on the latter. Personally, I feel that despite Singapore being a developed nation, mental health and associated illnesses still seem to be a taboo subject. There is a misconception that seeking help for mental health is a show of weakness and there seems to be a general lack of understanding about mental illnesses/disorders. I have seen people shun patients with mental disorders due to discrimination, lack of understanding of the ailment, fear, or a combination of everything. Hopefully, there can be increased coverage and education to raise awareness and understanding about mental health such that it will no longer be a stigma. This will allow people suffering from mental illness to feel comfortable seeking help earlier and have a better chance at getting better.

<<< Thank you for visiting our fundraising page! Our usual fundraising portal is GIVEasia (https://give.asia/movement/mental_muscle_sahara_race_namibia_2016), however, due to technical difficulties encountered, we are temporarily migrating our fundraising portal to Simplygiving. We apologise for any inconveniences caused. Do drop us an email at [email protected] if you have any queries. Thank you for supporting Mental Health and SAMH! >>>Hello, we are four medical students from Singapore and in May 2016, we will be taking part in a Desert Race, as a team called “Mental Muscle”. The race will be held in Namib Desert, found in Namibia, south of the African Continent. It will span 7 consecutive days, where we have to cover a total distance of 250km each.We will be running to raise funds and awareness for Mental Health. In our society, many do not understand mental illnesses as much as other ailments of the body. As a result, there is a stigma that surrounds mental health and it has very real effects on people who have mental illnesses, even preventing them from seeking help. Our team hopes to address this stigma. To this end, we are very privileged to share that we will be working closely with the Singapore Association for Mental Health (SAMH) as our fundraising beneficiary. SAMH is the oldest community mental health agency in Singapore. It is a non-profit, voluntary welfare organisation seeking to promote mental health in the community and improve the rehabilitation and reintegration of persons with mental illness. Our goal is to raise $50,000 for SAMH and the funds will be used in 3 areas: 1. Building a vocational training school for teenagers and young adults affected by psychiatric conditions to equip them with skills required in the workforce, enabling them to integrate into society. 2. Increasing SAMH's awareness campaigns including roadshows and health talks. 3. Sustain SAMH’s existing services and facilities. From now till May 2016, our team, consisting of Nicholas Eu, Jonathan See, Stephen Hwang and Jon Tan, will be training hard and working diligently to realise this dream. We have been making small steps towards this goal, and you can follow us on the following platforms for more information and regular updates about our team, our training progress and awareness campaign: • Official website – www.mentalmuscle.org • Facebook page – www.facebook.com/mentalmuscle • Instagram – www.instagram.com/mental.muscle • SAMH website – www.samhealth.org.sg • Our email (ask us any questions) – [email protected] you believe in our team and our cause, we hope you will consider donating and contributing to our fundraising goal of $50,000. Every donation counts towards making our campaign a success. From the very bottom of our hearts, we thank you for supporting us along this journey. Every kind contribution made will be received with our deepest gratitude. To end off, here is some food for thought:Psychologist Guy Winch, in his TED talk made an interesting point. It is easy for us to go to someone with a mental health issue and say, "It's all in your head, why don't you just snap out of it?". Yet how often do we walk up to someone with a broken leg, and say, "It's all in your leg, why don't you just walk it off?" Mental illnesses are fundamentally similar to many diseases we know of, with well studied disease mechanisms and treatment options available. Why then do we find ourselves less empathetic towards people with mental illness? Why are we so eager to treat heart diseases or diabetes and yet so reluctant to approach mental illnesses?

Hi everyone! I will be taking part in OCBC Cycle Singapore 2013, The Super Challenge on 28th April 2013. This is my first bike race and I will be cycling 60km to raise money for Singapore Association For Mental Health. The Singapore Association for Mental Health was established in December 1968 to promote mental wellness and to empower people with mental illness in rebuilding their lives. It is a voluntary welfare organisation (non-government and non-profit), which seeks to promote the social and mental well-being of the people of Singapore. More specifically, the organisation aims to promote mental health, prevent mental illness, improve the care and rehabilitation of persons with mental illness, and to reduce the misconception and social stigma that surrounds mental illness. As a recovering patient, I wish to raise awareness about mental health and the stigma associated with it. Mental health patients are regular people who are struggling with illness and should not be branded or ostracized; they too wish to lead normal lives and be healthy. Thank you for visiting my page, please dig deep and donate, every little counts! :) Beat

Hi, thank you for visiting my personal fundraising page. I will be doing a triathlon on 20th January 2013 and aiming to raise money for Singapore Association For Mental Health (SAMH). Why SAMH? I had suffered Post Trauma Stress Disorder (PTSD) for a couple of years after my accident in 2008 that had crippled me. I was living in fear, hopeless and depressed together with repeated nightmares and flashbacks of the accident. SAMH had offered me its kind help, counselling and guidance (all, free of charge) to conquer this PTSD. I am very thankful and I had recovered well after receiving SAMH's help. SAMH advised me to take up sports to keep my life going. Since then, I played table tennis, bowling and now becoming a Wheelchair Triathlete. Yes, I have suffered a hand (right) injury and am going for my hand surgery after Chinese New Year. Maybe I cannot complete this triathlon. To me, its not about completion, it will be more about conquering every step every kilometre no matter how pain it will be; just like how I had walked out from the Dark Scary PTSD. Hope to receive your blessing especially in my upcoming hand surgery. Since I am now still fit and have a normal upperbody (before surgery), I will do the upcoming triathlon and also to fundraise for SAMH in appreciation of its help and guidance in my life. Please show us your support too by giving a little donation!!! :-D Through simplygiving.com you can make safe and secure donations to sponsor me. The proceeds of your support are immediately sent directly to my charity namely Singapore Association For Mental Health (SAMH). Using this given platform is really simple and most importantly it's also a really cost efficient way for the charity to raise funds. My page allows you to follow my progress; share it with friends; voice encouragement or even join me and get involved yourself! Please dig deep and donate, every little counts! Fong Chun Cheong
