During a work meeting last year, a colleague made a spontaneous joke about wishing to pay me to "get rid of that beard!" which led to an impromptu fundraising effort and in under a week we managed to raise just over $7000 for the Children's Cancer Foundation (CCF) here in Singapore. Having been bald or "follically challenged" as some would prefer, since my late teenage years it is simply not possible for me to take part in the official Hope for Hair event which CCF puts on every year for brave participants to shave their heads. However, since the start of the pandemic, my beard length has often got out of control and therefore, it is my beard that will be sacrificed (for better or worse) as an alternative hair shaving event. But this year there is an added twist to my challenge! It is also the month of "Movember", a charity that is very close to my heart which helps raise awareness of men's health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's suicide. So, for the month of November I will be doing the "reverse Movember". For each week in November, I will be sporting a newly styled beard or mustache, reducing in size until I am fresh and baby-faced once again come December! I am personally pledging to match at least half of whatever we raise for the CCF to donate to the Movember Foundation, so please be twice as generous with your donations as the money will be going to two extremely worthwhile causes. I hope that the comedy value of my four rather embarrassing looks for your viewing pleasure will be enough to inspire great generosity!

Hey there!Growing my hair out was something I had always wanted to do and when I finally decided to do it, I wanted it to serve another purpose rather than just ticking something off my bucket list. That other purpose was donating my hair to charity where it would be made into a wig and help provide some comfort to an individual who is going through the biggest fight of them all...cancer.Growing my hair was something that I enjoyed doing and it was something that was also extremely annoying especially when it came to the "awkward stage" however, it was pretty cool seeing the changes in my own appearance as it grew longer. My last haircut was almost 2 years ago (29th November 2019).In today's world, cancer is quite a common illness and when undergoing treatment, losing your hair can be something that affects a person making them more insecure of their own appearances and you know what, that is something we should all try to help with in making sure that the individual fighting their battle is not alone and that their looks don't matter. It's something that happens in most cases naturally as we all grow older and we just need to come to terms with it. For those who wish to maintain their look however, I hope my hair helps to keep you looking as great as always.Today I will be cutting the vast majority of my hair (at least 7") and I'll be sending it to The Little Princess Trust which is a UK-based company that turns real hair into wigs for young cancer patients.Over the next 2 weeks I'll be raising funds for the Children's Cancer Foundation in Singapore. They aim to improve the quality of life of children with cancer and their families and children impacted by cancer through enhancing their emotional, social and medical well-being.Please feel free to help me raise funds for this charity, as every donation helps.Thank you!For more information, visit: https://www.ccf.org.sg/.Donating through SimplyGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. I've fractured my spine early November but had signed up for this marathon and another half marathon a week apart before the injury.  The pain I had was debilitating in the first few weeks but it's nothing when you think of how cancer destroyed the body cells of patients suffering from cancer.  Couldn't imagine how it will affect children for most of us.  Hope to complete both marathons and raise the funds for the foundation through my efforts at completing the runs.  Every little effort/money donated contribute to the cause and is appreciated.

Hello, I am Yvonne - an avid runner and primary school teacher! I started running from a young age, and have always loved running. Besides running, I also often play touch rugby as an alternative form of exercise. I am glad to be back on board as a Sundown With Love Ambassador for the second year running as it allows me to pursue my love for running while raising funds for charity. I would also encourage all runners participating in OSIM Sundown Marathon 2017 to join us as fundraiser and help raise funds for charity! I have chosen Children's Cancer Foundation (CCF) as the beneficiary of my fundraising effort through this run. Join me in supporting CCF mission to improve the quality of life of children with cancer and their families through enhancing their emotional, social and medical well-being.-----We’re honoured to have you back as our Sundown with Love ambassador for the second year in a row! What have you been up to recently? I have been busy with school events and preparing my pupils for their final exams. Apart from work, I have been training and spending some of my weekends racing! How do you juggle being a teacher and a runner, and excelling at both at the same time?Penning my training days, work schedule and racing plans down on the calendar helps me to do so. Besides time management, I have learnt to listen to my body and take breaks when necessary. I believe recognizing the importance of rest has allowed me to pursue my passion in both running and teaching.Being a teacher also means having to wake up extremely early, and ending your day late. Is sleep compromised? If so, how do you make up for that? It is true that sleep is often compromised, especially when we train late in the evenings after work. In order to make up for that, ideally, I would have a rest day after every two consecutive days of running. This routine has worked well for me so far and helped me keep track of my training. How often do you run in a week, and what sort of runs do you normally do? I run three to four times a week. I usually do long runs, tempo runs and fartleks. What tips can you provide runners who are participating in OSIM Sundown Marathon 2017 for the first time?Choose a distance that you are comfortable in doing. Running a distance longer than what your body can manage may lead to injuries.Get a running buddy.Have either a heavy lunch or an early dinner before the race as the first race usually starts only at 10pm. What is it about Sundown Marathon that keeps you coming back for more? The race atmosphere, cool night weather, and smooth running of the event. What’s your diet like? What would you recommend runners to eat prior to their run, especially since it’s happening at night? I enjoy eating food high in carbohydrates, vegetables and fruits. Potatoes, bread and pasta are my favourites. I would recommend runners to fuel their bodies with complex carbohydrates like whole fruits, potatoes and whole grains. They will help runners feel full and perform their best. Foods such as low-fiber cereal and peanut butter with banana wholegrain bread are some snacks runners can consider to boost their energy, without upsetting their stomach.Name one favourite food you cannot live without. Potatoes! What are some of your pre-race rituals?Sleep - Get sufficient sleep the night before the race. Hydration- Hydrate throughout the day and bring along a bottle of water for warm up.Race route - Find out about the race venue and familiarize myself with the race route.Warm up - Start warm up 45 minutes prior to the race with a short jog and dynamic stretches.Race gear - Wear my favourite pair of racers and attire. Put my race tag on and make sure that my shoelaces are sufficiently tight.Where do you foresee yourself in 10 years’ time? I foresee myself still training and racing in 10 years’ time. I hope to continue running for as long as my body can take me.

"I run not because I can. I run because others could not." This has been my personal motto ever since I took up the challenge to improve on my running. My aim is to run for as long as I can. Each run is a struggle but not as tough of a struggle as those being helped by the Children's Cancer Foundation. As a way of me giving back to society, I will donate $100 to Children's Cancer Foundation for each completed run. I hope that those of you who are reading this, please help me in my journey. Every donation counts. Be it small or big, it will be beneficial in the long run. Have a heart for the children, do your part. - #firepacer14
