SMK Kuala Kurau is rural school located in the north region of Perak. The parents of most school-going children here are fishermen, factory workers or they work in plantations and paddy fields. This places almost 80% of the children in household incomes of less than RM 1000. School is the place where students called it their second home. Despite the low academic achievement among students, sports is the bond that holds everyone together in this school. The majority of students here struggle to excel in academic achievement as it is among the under-performing schools in the nation. Most of the students here came from challenging background, and pursuing academic excellence wasn't their best interest. However, sports gives the students a sense of purpose and achievement, especially amidst low morale when it comes to academic excellence. So much so that over the years, SMK Kuala Kurau has developed outstanding handball players, two of whom have been selected for the national handball team. A huge contributing factor is the sometimes forgotten teachers and coaches who motivate the children and sacrifice their time and effort to nurture their potential. They do this consistently despite a lack of resources. This is because the school is lacking a training ground as well as facilities to train the players. They have to travel a long distance to another school for training, as the condition of SMK Kuala Kurau does not permit a conducive environment for training to take place. The only available location in the school is the field that becomes wet and muddy when it rains. Since the school is located in a coastal area, the weather is unpredictable throughout the year, causing disruptions to training sessions.  The Initiave: The aim of this campaign is to build a handball court for the school, thus providing a resource that does not merely help the students temporarily, but can raise school morale and nurture talent in a sustainable way and leave a legacy behind for Kuala Kurau. Handball being one of the school’s strongest points despite a lack of funding shows that given a push in the right direction, excellence in this area would be able to flourish.

Nov 11 & 12, 2015 (Wed & Thurs)SK Airport, Belaga had finally organized its 2015 Sports Day after its previous Sports Day in 2013. The funds raised are mostly used to purchase presents for the students. This time around, the winners have medal, trophies and even hampers. Not only the kids enjoyed themselves, the whole Belaga community were so happy to see Sports Day being relived. Stay tuned to see more photos!______________________________________________________________________________________________This is a third year of my teaching career here at SK Airport, Belaga. 4 hours of 4WD driving from Bintulu and 30 minutes of boat riding, there is my school. As a sports teacher, I determine to contribute as much as I could. When I was first posted here in 2012, I involved in organizing the Sports Day. It was great to see the whole community got involve in  such event. There were no medals for the winners; just a few soaps wrapped in 'kertas minyak' as the presents. They accepted them proudly. However, that was it. For certain reasons, we couldn't organize the event on the following years. It is responsibility to make it happen again this year and I'm planning to make it better. Pupils have been working so hard this year and they deserve something as rewards. The initiative here is to provide medals for the winners and buying "tug of war" rope so the whole community could enjoy participating the events. This is the event that could unite us and encourage pupils to love their school, parents to involve more in school events, and teachers to see their pupils shine in co-curriculum aspect.Cost breakdown:The  maximum cost is RM 1300 to buy 120 ft rope, medals and  a few sets of sports attires for pupils. Some of it will be used to organize the event in term of preparation. Would  love to accept donations in form of used "tug of war" rope too!

"Look at this picture, what do you see? Why do you think he leave his original country and ended up drowning in the sea?" me, showing picture of the unfortunate drown Syrian boy that was washed upon the Greek shore.  "Omg, kesiannya. What happened to him? "  "Who killed him?"  "Why did he leave his original country?"  And so begin the class on why people leave/flee their country of origin, or in the textbook terms, emigration factors. We discussed for 40 minutes, whether it is right or wrong for the EU to reject the refugee and relating it back to Malaysia and how we treat our Rohingya refugees. We also talked about why and in what situation would people leave their country of origin - why are people leaving Bangladesh and Indonesia and come to work in Malaysia, or why are Malaysians leaving Malaysia to work in Singapore or the US. Everyone participated enthusiastically, and for some of them, this is the first time they hear the term "refugee" while others, they are not aware of the brain drain issue that is plaguing our country. For many of them, they have a new found respect for the millions of foreign workers working in our country.  They wrote down names of countries and events as this was the first time they hear about Syrian conflict and the Rohingya issue, or brain drain.  Believe it or not, I am doing all this, and yet, I am still teaching within my curriculum guide that was designed by the MOE.  Contrary to popular beliefs, our country social science curriculum for secondary school (Geography and History) is actually not as bad as we think. We have topics covering from environmental sustainability, to urbanizations, to population issues,to poverty and to the country's economic activities and its impact on the people in the Geography class while in History, we learnt how our weaknesses invite foreign power to colonize our country or how going on the street and going on strike was how we earned independence 58 years ago.  Having been a Geography teacher for close to 3 years, my heart warms up everytime when I hear students saying how they will start recycling, how they plan to improve the public transportation in Malaysia, and most importantly, how they will become better citizens of Malaysia, and a better global citizen. I know I can do so much more with my experience, my understanding of how to integrate current issues with the syllabus, as well as my wish for my students to be better global citizen. But I need your help! Introduction My name is David Chak and I have been a Geography teacher in SMK Taman Sejahtera, Bukit Mertajam for close to 3 years. I was first posted here under the Teach for Malaysia fellowship program back in 2013 and have decided to soldiered on to be a permanent government teacher after my 2 years fellowship with Teach for Malaysia. One of the main reasons I stayed on after 2 years is that I always believe that change is not something that can happen in short term. I cant expect myself to be at this school for 2 years and expect my students to all grow up to become doctors, engineers and become the right people to lead the country in the future. The same belief applies for how I think we should improve and change this country. I strongly believe in changing the world through education, one step, one topic at a time. How can our students be a leader of the country, if they are not aware of what is happening around them? We talked about the importance of language education, STEM education, and yet, we forgot about educating our children about the world around them.    I have been trying to integrate current issues as I see fit with the current KBSM Geography curriculum and have seen tremendous interests from the students. For many of them, they do not read newspaper nor do they watch daily news. Their only source of information is the internet, and we all know how misleading internet can be sometimes. They are not aware of the constructions of mega dams in Sarawak and its implications on the environment and the indigenous people, the bauxite pollution happening in Pahang, or rampant illegal logging in Sarawak. They are not aware of the gender inequality in education happening in India and Pakistan, the aging population in Japan and its implication, or urbanization problems happening in big cities around the world.  And yet, I know these are the topics that we could and should discuss in a Geography class. For all the things I've mentioned above, there's at least one or two lesson objectives, taken verbatim from the Geography curriculum guide, that can be matched perfectly to them. I know i can do so much more with the curriculum - IF i can have a subject based classroom dedicated to Geography.  As the Geography panel head for this year, I was given the opportunity to transform an existing classroom/storeroom into a subject classroom.  Objective  To create a subject based classroom for Geography (and other Social Science subject) so that we can create a conducive, and properly equipped environment for the students to learn the subject.  I have been fundraising since February and have managed to fundraise enough (RM1200) to install 1 unit of air conditioner in the room, 1 whiteboard, as well as fixing and installing several power socket in the room. But the process is painstakingly slow and ineffective. And if not for this initiative, I do not see an end to reaching my goal to fully equip the room. Hence, I need your help to finish the race with me! Cost breakdown  1) Projector         RM1400  2) Chairs  RM800  3) Notice boards  RM800  4) Classroom Displays and Lesson Materials     RM1000  5) Magnetic Whiteboard  RM500  6) Projector Screen         RM200  7) Stationeries (Post-its, marker pen, etc)          RM300    Upon reaching the project fundraising goal, I will also make my lessons open source – all the worksheets, powerpoints, videos, lesson plans and other resources will be packaged into lesson modules that any Malaysian Geography teacher can take it and use it – all free of charge.  By helping us reach the goal, you are not only helping the Geography teachers of SMK Taman Sejahtera to impact the 400+ students taking the subject in the school, you are also enabling thousands more other Geography teachers to help educate our children to be a better citizen.  TL;DR Version:  My name is David Chak and I am a Geography teacher and the head of Geography panel at SMK Taman Sejahtera. I would like to fundraise for my school’s Social Science Room in order to create a conducive and properly equipped classroom for my students to learn Geography.  I have been trying to integrate current issues into my Geography lesson and it’s been working really well – it would be even better if I have a subject based classroom where I can put up all my classroom displays and the students’ work. I have independently raised enough to make the first step. I would love to have you on board to help finish my fundraising. If the project goal is reached, I will make my lesson opensource for all Geography teachers in Malaysia. .

While many sit and complain about our education system, a group of us decided to quit our high flying jobs in the corporate sector to teach students in rural areas and urban slumps. I was once a management consultant in an international firm. On weekends, I spent my time teaching English to a group of students. Here, I have met parents who not only struggle to put food on the table but also struggled to put their kids in school. That was when I decided to take that leap of faith to quit my job and be a teacher. The Initiative - Project GUSTO (Ground up School Transformation) A public-private-partnership that aims to transform schools through enhancing teachers' pedagogical teaching thus improving students’ outcome. Project GUSTO is founded by a group of young teachers who were adamant in making systematic changes in the education system. Inspired by a visit conducted to a trust school (a model whereby public schools are adopted by corporate organizations to drive transformation) in Johor, the teachers were so encouraged and inspired to replicate that similar transformation to the schools in which they were teaching. To some, that was also the turning point that made them remain in the teaching profession. At present, 5 schools from Penang and Perak have been selected to participate in this program. The funding is for? Creating a 21st century learning environment for the students - To replace the blackboards across our 8 form 1 & 2 classes with whiteboards and equip 2 classes with a projector.Project GUSTO is now 5 months into implementation. To date, teachers and principals have witnessed a tremendous transformation taking place in their schools. Eg: attendance have increased, students are actively asking and participating in lessons, teachers are collaborating more frequently to improve their lessons, etc.Cost Breakdown 8 whiteboards = RM1,6002 projectors = RM2,400

One of the students approach me one day right before the Raya holiday and said that he has never had the opportunity to go out of Mahang. He continued by asking me to take him to my house for the Raya trip. Upon hearing this I began to slowly ask some of the other students about their situations. Eventually, I discovered that going out of Mahang and even going to Kulim is a luxury that some of them can’t afford. With such limited exposure, what most lacking for my students is also this value of cultural awareness and also respect for the other races. The Initiative - Post Raya Trip for SMK Mahang’s StudentsTo cultivate awareness in my students on the importance to learn and respect the cultural differences that we have right now in Malaysia, I would like to bring my 40 students for a 2D1N post ‘Raya’ trip to Penang, visiting various cultural sites. The factors contributing to my initiative includes: Penang has amazing cultural heritageBecause I believe that at their age right now, it is a great time to foster this appreciation for different culture and make them embrace the uniqueness that every race in Malaysia have to offerCost BreakdownAccommodation (RM25 per night per pax) = RM1,000Transport: 1 bus for 2 days = RM1,400

Oct 29, 2015 (Thurs)Cikgu Hadibah brought her students to Lost World of Tambun for a Special Needs Aquatic Therapy. All 30 students, aged from 5 to 14 enjoyed the therapy a lot. Not only the therapy makes the kids happy, it is helpful for them too. Remember Aisyah who had Cerebral Palsy? She cannot stop express how happy she was with the therapy. She moved confidently in the water and did not want to leave the place. _________________________________________________________________________________________________One of our pupils, Aisyah (10 years old) has Cerebral Palsy after she fell down from her cradle when she was a baby. She can only walk a few steps with assistance, or she needs a wheelchair to move around. When we bring her for the aqua therapy in a hot spring, I was surprised at how much she can move in the water, considering how difficult it is when she tried to walk. Therefore, I would like to continue organizing Special Needs Aquatic Therapy for my pupils. The initiative - Special Needs Aquatic TherapyAn annual fun and beneficial program for children with various special abilities and needs, tailored to address the physical, cognitive and psycho-social needs of each participant. This program aims to benefit 50 pupils from Sekolah Kebangsaan Datin Khadijah Kuala Kangsar with multiple disabilities (learning disabilities, autism, down syndrome, cerebral palsy, deaf), covering age from 5 to 14 years old.Water is a great leveler, providing children the most enormous psychological and emotional boostViscosity of water gives a child time to react and experiment with the consequences of movement, allowing them to perform and learn movements that would otherwise be too difficult to perform on landThe hydrostatic pressure created when partially or fully submerged in water improves circulation, increases the work of breathing, and gives the body 360 degrees of deep pressureThe overall enjoyment of the pool makes achieving therapy goals considerably easier.Cost BreakdownAdmission fees (RM45 x 50 pupils) = RM2,250Transportation: bus (RM800 x 2) = RM1,600Breakfast & lunch (RM20 x 50 pupils) = RM1,000Activities: games etc. = RM150

It is severely vandalized by modern graffiti and illegal quarrying – mainly due to the unawareness of this valuable and fragile cultural heritage among the local community. A recent survey among a pool of 100 local residents of Tambun  shows that 78 percent of the respondents are unaware of the existence of this prehistoric rock art site in Ipoh. What worrying is that out of 51 respondent who age between 18-25 years old, only 2 local respondents are aware of the prehistoric rock art of Tambun. This scenario indicates that the local heritage awareness among the Tambun community, especially among the young, are extremely low. When I started teaching Form 3 students, I realized that they have limited exposure on things and opportunities beyond their classroom walls. When they were assigned to excavate for online resources for their group presentations, project-based learning & Penilaian Tingkatan 3 (PT3), most of them could not produce a concrete quality output. It came to my knowledge that most of them have zero access to internet, limited facilities that could allow them to perform such activities and simply being technology illiterate. The initiative - SMART Research Classroom Transformation of the History Room to:Ameliorate the functionality of a room as a hub for students to unearth online resources for their learningProvide the dais of exposureImprove technology literacyIncorporate technology and make learning full with jollificationsAs I’m teaching 7 classes, a total of 230 students will be impacted per academic year.Cost BreakdownThe maximum amount, RM5000 to buy few sets of desktop (aim to get 7 sets for 7 groups). Kumar* stopped coming to school sometime in May this year. I tried hard to get him to stay – I went to his house many times to persuade him, I spoke to his grandmother, his sister, his friends. His attendance waned, and then one day he just stopped coming completely. His reason: he lost interest, and he had to work. My heart broke but the more I thought about it the more I understood:The concept of academic learning for a long term future goal like university and employment is not aligned to their reality, to help support their struggling families. Their motivations for learning would be with a more immediate goal – survival in their suburban, industrial community. Individuals learn differently, but schools teach in mostly one way.
