Hello! After spending two months with this organization, we are working to raise money for the Malaysian Social Research Institute (MSRI). MSRI is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Our team at MSRI works to carry out humanitarian services for disadvantaged and marginalized communities. You can click on the main fundraising page to read more about our services, but we run three main programs: formal education for refugee students, an awareness and education program for violence against women and children, and a food aid program that distributes to families in the community. We have spent the last few months getting to know the students, teaching, and helping out with the many dimensions required for running a nonprofit. We have been met with kindness and compassion every step of the way. To give back, we are hoping to raise funds for MSRI’s Sahabat School for refugees. With funds, we want to invest in new backpacks for the students and cover the fees for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) exam for our older students finishing secondary school.New school backpack - 100 MYR (30 CAD or 20 USD)IGCSE Exam - 2500 MYR (715 CAD or 540 USD)We greatly appreciate anything you are able to contribute! Please help us spread the word!Follow us on Instagram to follow our journey in Malaysia.Instagram @faaizaandbrigitte

There are over 180,000 refugees registered in UNHCR in Malaysia. These refugees have access to public & private healthcare facilities; however, due to limiting barriers such as cost, transportation, and language, refugees continue to struggle in obtaining proper medical treatment at primary healthcare facilities. Especially due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the public sector healthcare is currently incredibly overcrowded in Malaysia. Affordable healthcare to a vulnerable minority population--like refugees--is crucial, as early treatment could prevent a variety of severe illnesses, which, if left untreated, would cost much more to refugee families in the long-term. Our campaign is supported by Global Doctors and the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) to work towards providing close to free primary healthcare & consultancy services for over 200 refugees that are registered under the Malaysian Social Research Institute (MSRI), and the Zotung Refugee Catholic Learning Center (ZRCLC). Global Doctors has already partnered with the UNHCR in Malaysia and opened a refugee clinic in Mont Kiara that provides free physician consultation, diagnostics, and imaging services (ex. X-rays. CT scans). However, blood tests, a crucial healthcare procedure does require payment. Thanks to the National Cancer Society of Malaysia, a healthcare package including blood tests and BMI measurement has been provided to these refugees although they are non-Malaysians. All funds generated through this campaign will be used in three primary ways. First, it will go towards purchasing pharmaceutical supplies for the Global Doctor's refugee clinic. Second, it will pay for the refugee healthcare package offered by NCSM which includes blood tests. Lastly, and most importantly, it will cover transportation fees for the refugees (who currently reside primarily in Ampang) to travel to these primary healthcare facilities.

Hasina* is a 12-year-old girl from Pakistan who came to Malaysia with her family to seek asylum over four years ago. Around three years ago, Hasina developed a rare foot deformity that prevents her from walking properly. Hasina has been diagnosed with hereditary sensory motor neuropathy (HSMN). She suffers from bilateral cavanus deformity and bilateral foot drop. Her sister Hareem* explains that the doctors have dismissed Hasina’s case due to their status and the understanding that they will not be able to afford the costly treatment. Hasina requires a bilateral solid ankle foot orthotic and a rollator in order to start her path to rehabilitation. Hareem says that if they had money, Hasina’s situation would have been prevented. Hasina desperately needs support towards her treatment. Hasina is a very bright young girl who speaks, reads and writes in English. She enjoys learning and going to school; however, her condition has prevented her from continuing her education the past two years. Her mother is a single mom who earns a living through embroidery work, where she earns as little as RM1 for every cloth she embroiders. Due to their family having very little income, they are unable to pay for the necessary transportation Hasina needs to go to school due to her health condition. Hasina explains to us that she is very bored at home all day. When asked what she does all day, Hasina says "sleeping, sleeping, always sleeping". Hasina wishes to be able to play with her friends once her situation improves. Her mother and sister have tirelessly tried to find supports and alternative ways to improve Hasina’s life. Her sister Hareem states that, “if Hasina can walk, she can continue her life and go to school”.   The quotation photo we have attached indicates the medical equipment Hasina needs in order to improve her situation and health, thus allowing her to continue her education at MSRI's school with her friends. We hope that you are able to financially contribute to help Hasina. The money raised is not just for the equipment, but to help her family during their resettlement process. *names have been changed to protect confidentiality

Our clients that comprise of individuals from Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia (Palestine, Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, Iraq, Sudan etc.) are currently making Malaysia their temporary home while they await permanent resettlement in either United States, Canada, Australia or any other resettlement countries. Tracy and I have been interning for an amazing non-profit, MSRI, in Kuala Lumpur for 3.5 months now, and still have 3 months left. MSRI provides services, such as healthcare and education, to refugees in Malaysia. We currently work with the education program, and  see the positive difference these services are providing in children's lives. We would love to provide extracurricular activities for the students in the school. Tracy is starting an Art Club and a Creative Writing Club, while I am starting an English Conversation Club and a Sustainability Club. We wish to bring the students out into the community, for example to an urban farm where they would be taught about permaculture, but of course that requires funding. Please contribute to having a positive impact on the lives of our students; every little bit counts! Thank you!

MSRI provides monetary support in order to partly finance their medical, livelihood needs, and food support. Milk packets (for new-born babies, young children, family milk) is part of what we offer for food support. For individuals with children, sufficient stock for milk is definitely needed and highly requested. We are currently facing issues due to our limitation of funding. We are currently unable to allocate money for food support purposes, thus, only relying on donations to ensure we have enough food supplies to be given out to our clients in times of emergency.MSRI gives out around 80-100 milk packets every month. However, on months where no milk donations are received, we have to restrict the amount given out and sometimes we are not able to provide any milk packets at all. This situation would highly affect families with new-born babies and young children as well as for individuals that could not afford to buy food because they would drink milk as a meal replacement (some clients are suffering from malnutrition). Our hope is that through this Milk Drive, we are able to consistently provide milk packets in order to ensure our clients are able to have a healthy and well-nourished diet and preventing further health issues, financial needs for medication, and hospital visits. We would like to thank everyone in advance for the contributions you will and have given to us. Your contributions will definitely help alleviate the difficulties we are facing to provide our clients with the best services possible.

150 of Rohingyan refugees aged 4 to 14+ years old are struggling daily in a foreign country which is very alien to them, from having language barriers to receiving education that every single children in the world deserves. All hundreds of them are squeezed in a small house, the so-called an informal school located at Ampang, everyday, just to get to the opportunity to learn. However, they learn in an extremely unbearable condition; at an outdoor classroom with only a tent as a shelter. Even the kitchen space is used as one of the classrooms, which is stuffy and not conducive. The school is also struggling financially. Everyday, they are thriving to make ends meet. They receive no help from any government organization nor the NGOs. Therefore, they rely solely on people's donation to sustain the school. On top of that, they lack of teaching manpower. Two of the teachers left due to lack of funding to pay their salary of RM 800 per month. Due to this, they are really in need and dependent on teaching manpower to teach the children in Darul Eslah. We believe that each one of you have the power and capability to make a change in their lives. RM 10 of yours can help brighten 10 children's day when they're provided with bread for breakfast. All the money will directly be donated to the Darul Eslah Rohingya Academy. These kids are not different from us, they are just like us, human beings who deserves education, love and care. This school is the only hope for the kids to have a better life.

Hello! Most of you have heard of the global refugee crisis. The ongoing conflicts in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and the Gaza Strip. The tighter border controls in Europe. And as a result, many of the refugees and asylum seekers have sought refuge in Malaysia, while waiting to be resettled in a country that signs the 1951 Refugee Convention. In January 2017, over 150,000 refugees and asylum seekers are registered with UNHCR Malaysia. While majority of the group comes from Myanmar, almost 17,000 of them come from other countries which include Pakistan, Yemen, Syria, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine. This is where MSRI comes in. For almost a decade, we have been providing service assistance to these particular groups, through our range of programmes, such as:- MSRI Education Programme- MSRI Family Health Programme- MSRI Livelihood Programme and Emergency SupportWe have registered approximately 1,847 refugee and asylum seeker families by December 2016, totaling up to 5,764 individuals. That's only almost 4% of the entire refugee and asylum seeker population registered with UNHCR Malaysia,  but already more than enough to amount to needs and demands that go beyond what we can provide based on our limited capacity. As a non-profit organisation, we rely solely on YOUR generous contributions in order to keep our operations going. The money we receive goes a long way towards: - Effective implementation of our programmes - Providing allowances to refugees and asylum seekers who work with us, be it as interpreters, teachers or assistants (to minimise hand-out culture, we provide as many income-generating opportunities as we can to refugees and asylum seekers) - Getting more vouchers to allow highly vulnerable families purchase their own basic needs such as food- Appointing full-time quality specialists such as doctors and counsellors for our health programme- Producing educational materials- Keeping our premises which contain all of our servicesHere's a a breakdown of some of our costs:- MSRI School Nutrition Programme: RM1 per child x 250 children at MSRI School for 20 school days in a month = RM5,000 per month.- Food Voucher: RM200 voucher x 80 highly vulnerable families per month = RM16,000 per month.- MSRI Outreach Work: RM3,000 per case worker (1 case worker can conduct 24 house visits in a month, 288 house visits in a year).- MSRI Health Programme: RM8,400 per month for medical supplies and medication.- Language services: RM1,300 per month for an interpreter (Farsi / Arabic / Somali).- RM9,400 (inclusive of maintenance and rental costs) for each facility of respective programme. And here are some of the impacts that your support can deliver:- RM20 can provide food to ONE child for one school month.-RM150 can go towards effective monitoring and evaluation work (which are crucial for MSRI in identifying gaps, needs and impact assessment) for a day.- RM200 can provide one monthly food voucher for one family, enabling them the freedom and dignity to purchase their own needs such as fresh vegetables, toiletries, or even toys (which can have positive psychological effects on their children).- RM300 can help with medication for chronic illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, epilepsy or other. The same amount can also be used to sustain our operations within our premises for a day.- RM1,400 can be used to appoint one teacher from the refugee / asylum seeker community, which gives them not only income generating opportunity, but also skills to develop themselves and their communities. Why RM500,000?Although RM500,000 seems like a gigantic figure, MSRI requires at least RM2-3million each year to run its programmes effectively in order to reach out to almost 2,000 refugee and asylum seeker families. Through this campaign, we hope to address each and every existing gap in our work, and optimise our services to the target population. Please support us in delivering more effective service assistance to more refugees and asylum seekers! Tax deductible receipts will be issued upon donations made.

This World Refugee Day I have set myself a personal challenge to raise funds and awareness about refugees and asylum-seekers in Malaysia. For this challenge I will be aiming to complete 5km on a treadmill everyday (after work and child duties), starting on World Refugee Day (20 June) and until the last day of the month. If this does not sound challenging enough, I will be listening to my least favourite singer's music - Justin Bieber. And, I will make sure not to touch a drop of wine or alcohol for the entire time too. If you know me, you will also know this is going to be HARD!Ok - so you are a fan of Bieber? Fine, I will not hold it against you. You can make a request for one day for me to listen to your least favourite singer, but it will cost you a donation! Please support me by donating to my challenge and help me spread the word. All funds raised will go towards MSRI, a grassroots organisation that I am proud to be working for. The money will be used to ensure the organisation can continue to deliver its education, family health and emergency programs, building capacity and resilience in refugee and asylum-seeker communities in Malaysia.Thank you!

Hi there! My name is Sydrah, and my friends and family know just how much I love arts. I started drawing since I was a kid and have spent growing up developing my own style. You can check out my page here:   https://www.facebook.com/sydriyaart/?fref=nf During my time in Sydney, I met a refugee artist who is quite well-known for painting using coffee as a medium. I was so inspired, that I decided to give it a try, and who would have thought that I would soon discover my own niche as well! If you haven’t known it already, World Refugee Day is celebrated on 20 June every year as a way to promote inclusivity and understanding of refuges around the world. So, as part of MSRI’s World Refugee Day Challenge 2016 initiative (which will be from 13-30 June), I will produce 1 coffee painting a day, for the entire of 18 days. If you like my work, you may feel free to contribute any amount deemed reasonable via this Simply Giving page. I’m pretty much selling art here, with the only difference being that the money being made will 100% go towards giving support to the refugee and asylum seeker communities living around the Klang Valley. Just to give you an example: - Your RM50 donation can be used to buy basic groceries for one family. - Your RM500 donation can be used to support one refugee with a chronic disease (heart problem, surgery, etc) in getting hospital treatment. So here's how it works:- If you donate RM15, you'll get a postcard with any of the paintings I made throughout this challenge printed on it.- If you donate RM30 or above, you can request whichever painting you'd like to be on the postcard, together with a poem. If you REALLY like my work, and are willing to donate RM200 and above, then you can select any of my artwork (large-sized) that you’d like to keep. How does that sound? :)

On June 6th I began fasting (no water or food) for 12 hours during the day, like most of my colleagues and members of my host community. It’s currently the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, during which more than 1.5 billion people are celebrating around the world. I am fasting to raise funds for MSRI, where I’m currently interning, to support the many essential services they offer to refugees and asylum seekers.             The reality that many in this world have inadequate access to water and nutritious food is motivating me to challenge myself. As a result of my positionality in this world of systemic inequality, the likelihood that I will ever experience real hunger or thirst is slim. I often, however, complain that I am hungry or thirsty but my livelihood and health are never at risk. I take my easy access to water and food for granted while many are struggling for these two basic human needs and rights.   All the funds raised go directly to MSRI to support their valuable work and services they offer. Please support this cause. Any contribution would go a long way.     One of my favourite local meals (see picture above) is Roti Canai which costs ~$1.00. Even a dollar would help. Please Donate today! You can also choose your own challenge to raise funds for MSRI and World Refugee Day.

For people who know me, I am known to love dancing and the occasional recording of Dubsmash videos. And when I hear my favourite tunes being played, I can't help but sing and dance to it. So when I heard about this challenge to raise money and awareness during World Refugee Day, I thought why don't I take what I love doing for my friends and family, and share it with the outside world. Pretty scary! So The Dare To Dance Project is now on! I hope donations will be made to MSRI, an NGO that does so much good for the refugee community in Malaysia; and I hope that some smiles (and most likely laughs) will be brought to all who will see what I do. This project starts on the 13th June and will run for a full month until the 13th July! You will be able to see all the videos up on YouTube. Check out my 'welcome' video at https://youtu.be/HrDGllEJO84How does it work?It is very simple. All you do is donate, any contribution is welcomed, then depending on the amount that you have donated, I will go to a place in KL, Malaysia (preferably where people are in a queue), play that specific song and dance away! It will not be a full song unless it is one of the highest campaign perks (see below). Everything will be documented so you will know that the 'Dare' has been done after your generous donation has been received. The higher the donation, the more you can receive special perks. Tier 1 - Donate RM50You can choose a song but not the whole song will be playedTier 2 - Donate RM100You can choose a song and I will dance to one minute of itTier 3 - Donate RM200You can choose a song and I will dance to two minutes of itTier 4 - Donate RM300You can choose a song and I will dance to three minutes of it (which is on average the length of an entire song)Tier 5 - Donate RM500 (The Biggest Perk!)You can not only choose a song, but you can also choose the location! PLUS I will dance to the entire song!Group donations for the biggest perk are more than welcome! For those who just want to donate for the cause without any 'Dare' being done is also welcomed. Just a few guidelinesSince this is all going to be done in public, please choose a song that is appropriate for the general public. It is also during the month of Ramadan and we all must remember to be respectful to each other, whichever time of the year. Choose a song that brings a smile onto your face (for example like the song Happy or the Frozen song). If I feel that an inappropriate song has been requested, I will contact the donor and we will negotiate on selecting a different song. Because of your generosity I do want contributors to be more involved. Where does the money go to?All the generous contributions collected through this SimplyGiving website will be sent directly to MSRI and will be used to assist their programmes that help the refugee community in Malaysia. You can view more on their programmes at http://msri.org.my/v5/sahabat-programmes/sahabat-support-centre/Examples of how your donations can help!- Your RM50 donation can be used to buy basic groceries for one family. - Your RM500 donation can be used to support one refugee with a chronic disease (heart problem, surgery, etc) in getting hospital treatment.Since it is also part of MSRI's challenge, you can see more info at http://msri.org.my/v5/get-involved/events/world-refugee-day-challenge/ For more information you can contact me at [email protected] or send me a message on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/thedaretodanceproject/. Hello there!I have been with MSRI since April 2015, starting as volunteer and intern. Now MSRI trusts me as one of their Counselors in the clinic. As a counselor, lending my ear for the refugee to hear their struggles and  maintain their psychological well-being is my main job. After one year I am being a companion for the refugees, I feel I need to step out from the counselor room and do more!. I am working together with MSRI to provide the necessary help for my clients, but sometimes lack of funding stops us.Hence, I want to challenge myself to run for at least 3 KM per day from 13th June to 24th June for the refugees and for my own health of course! Hopefully by doing this I can generate some money which of course will be given fully to the refugees! I will post pictures of me doing this everyday as the "empirical evidence" and I will do my best and pray for the rest!Thank you for reading my story!Ronald

If anyone knows me, they know I'm a complete sugar addict. I will give up finishing my main dish so that I can have dessert. I will be the one to suggest, not the coffee break, but the chocolate/lolly break. And then I will complain about how much sugar I've been eating and how bad it is for me! So this time I'm taking real action, for a good cause.I'm currently working for the Malaysian Social Research Institute providing legal aid to some of the most vulnerable refugees and asylum seekers in Kuala Lumpur. I need your help so that we can keep delivering a high standard of services and expand those to fill the needs of our beneficiaries. Enjoy watching me painfully decline dessert, lurking at a cake stall, or walking back and forth in the lollies alley of Jaya Grocer. Don't mind me, I'll be the freak drooling in front of Natural Confectionery Snakes. GET DONATING! #jqsformsri

Hi,I am working as volunteer Coach and Consultant 4 days a week leading the MSRI Ahead project. Better client services and a more diversified funding base are key objectives. The funding has not kept pace with the increase in services. And a lot of refugees (mainly from Middle East) are still on the waiting list. Better branding is considered a must to attract more funding and donations. We have started a project New web site and are making progress in shaping our new branding. My challenge is not only to lead this project, but also to raise money for the design of the new website. If we are able to raise around RM 15 000, then we can start the design. The new website will be operational in approx. 3 months after we have confirmed the order with the vendor. My life is about sharing my energy and experience with those who need. But I cannot do it on my own.
