Hello, my name is Michelle and I am a recent graduate in the class of 2022 from the Canadian International School of Hong Kong. Over the past year, I have had the pleasure of volunteering at the Hong Kong Shark Foundation (HKSF) and working alongside Andrea Richey, HKSF's executive director. Through this experience, I have learned about the issue of the consumption of shark products, especially in Hong Kong.  Hong Kong Shark Foundation (HKSF) is a registered charity dedicated exclusively to shark conservation. The foundation aims to raise awareness about shark conservation, particularly the unsustainable practice of shark finning, and to reduce the consumption of shark products in Hong Kong. Issue of Shark Fin Trade in Hong Kong Every year, over 100 million sharks are caught worldwide for shark fins and other products, with over 50% of the world’s shark fins being traded through Hong Kong alone. As apex predators, sharks are a crucial part of the marine food chain. The demand for shark products has contributed to the rapid decline of many species, with several already nearing extinction. This is an important issue as the scope goes beyond just sharks, as they play an important role in our ocean ecosystems and the entirety of the earth. Donate today to help save the sharks and create a better future for future generations! When the buying stops, the killing stops too! Extinction is Forever – please donate now.For more information, please visit HKSF's website: https://www.hksharkfoundation.org

We are a team of Year 12 students, currently studying at West Island School. We believe that together, with your help, we can make a difference and raise awareness about shark conversation.  Hong Kong Shark Foundation (HKSF) is a registered charity dedicated exclusively to shark conservation. We aim to raise awareness about shark conservation, particularly the unsustainable practice of shark finning, and to reduce the consumption of shark products in Hong Kong. Why sharks? As apex predators, sharks are a crucial part of the marine food chain. Removing top predators such as sharks will threaten the delicate balance of ecosystems that are valuable sources of food and key elements In regulating our climate. In the long run, this affects our oceans' ability to absorb carbon, generate oxygen and regulate our climate. With our oceans relentlessly degrading, restoring sharks is crucial to enhancing the resilience of our oceans to climate change. Why do we need your help? HKSF receives funding primarily from individuals like you and the nature, extent, and success of their efforts are highly dependent on the commitment and support of our supporters and volunteers. HKSF's work is diverse, ranging across the areas of educational programs, corporate social responsibility advocacy, and public awareness-raising. We need your help because every year, at least 100 million sharks are caught worldwide, 11,000 killed every hour, 190 killed every minute. With over 50% of the world’s shark fin being traded through Hong Kong alone, with your help, today, we have a rare opportunity through our local efforts to make a significant impact on a global scale. Your help can make a difference. Every little counts! Our donation process is simple and quick, in just a minute, your donation will be on its way to support shark conservation.  By making a single donation, or a regular commitment each month, you can support us in our daily efforts. Hello, My name is Riah and I'm currently on a gap year interning at Hong Kong Shark Foundation. The following year I plan to study Environmental Sustainability and Management in the UK. I want to help raise awareness about shark conservation in Hong Kong and the negative impacts of shark fin soup. 100 million sharks are killed for their fins and more than 270 million are killed annually. A decline in the apex predator population can also lead to severe environmental consequences. A continuous decrease of shark populations can result in degradation and loss of biodiversity in marine ecosystems. In other words, a decline of sharks would lead to a changes in populations in other fisheries. This would not only have a cascade of environmental impacts but can also affect the global economic and food security. There are no longer any sharks in Hong Kong due to overfishing. This is a call to action! Please help save sharks by donating to support Hong Kong Shark Foundation to raise awareness on shark cruelty and the importance of their presence in our delicate marine ecosystem.

Hello, we are two 3rd Year students from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. It's our pleasure and honor to be interns in 2021 at the Hong Kong Shark Foundation. We appreciate the hard work and dedication the Foundation has devoted to environmental protection. After joining the organization, our perception towards sharks completely changed - sharks are more afraid of you than you are of them! Most of you may assume sharks as killers, which leads to fear and suspicion. However, these prejudices are mostly reinforced by the media, like the famous Jaws movie franchise. Based on scientific research, there is only one in 3,748,067 chances you could be attacked and killed by a shark, which is a very small possibility. This is not an excuse to treat sharks in an unfair way.Did you know we kill over 100 million sharks per year? Every time there is a shark attack somewhere, humans just go on a rampage and kill every shark in the area. An estimated number of 100 million sharks are killed annually for their fins alone. Comparatively, deadly shark attacks against humans are extremely rare. By comparison, on average there are 6-8 people killed every year by shark attacks. It is clear who is more dangerous when comparing sharks and humans. You may have heard that eating shark fin soup could bring health benefits, like improving our sexual potency, skin quality, and prevention of certain diseases. However, there is no scientific evidence to support these alleged health benefits.  Additionally, not only do the fins contain heavy metal poisons like mercury, lead, and arsenic, it is absolutely inhumane to continue hunting sharks and consuming fins. Moreover, consuming shark fin soup has long been a Chinese traditional culture, which also contributed to 1/3 of sharks now facing EXTINCTION.  That said, will you still consume shark fin soup? Sharks are apex predators that keep the whole delicate marine ecosystem balanced and without sharks, we humans cannot survive. Is it time to protect the sharks in order to help ourselves and promote marine conservation? In the eyes of “face” and “survive”, which one will you select, either consume or stop?  Say “NO” to shark fin soup!Remember - when the buying stops, the killings stop TOO!

We are a team from the student council of CDNIS. Around the world, the shark population is a very serious matter, and things have gone worse. A lot of people assume that sharks harm the Earth, and take their fin to make soup, but these are all lies. We are here to take action, save these sharks, and prevent them from fishermen who take their fins away. Together as a community, we can take action and save the sharks!

We are 2 Grade 5 students studying at the ISF academy. When we walk around the streets , everywhere we look, we see shark fins on sale, and people sweeping dried shark fins of the shelves ,  we see people devouring shark fin soup in restaurants, and clinking  their glasses as they gulp down shark fin soup, celebrating a special day, yet unaware of the cruelty and immorality behind this innocent looking dish.   That is why we want to take action to turn Hong Kong into a greener, more sustainable, shark friendly city.

Hello, I am a student hoping to spread awareness about shark conservation as it is very alarming to see the rapid rate of the decrease in sharks around the world. That is why I am supporting HKSF for its mission of saving sharks before they go completely extinct. In Hong Kong, many enterprises and companies are still selling shark fins as shark fins soup is considered a symbol of luck and wealth. It is not only happening in Hong Kong but is also used in many other countries like Japan, Thailand, etc. Sharks are an important marine animal in the ecosystem in the ocean, without them, the ecosystem in the sea would be unbalanced. It is unfortunate that sharks get a bad reputation from movies and TV shows, I, a mere student, would love to save the sharks before they go extinct and I'm sure a lot of other newer generations would not want to miss out on beautiful creatures like the great sharks.I hope you understand the importance of this topic and how we are very privileged to be able to see sharks in this world until now. I would appreciate all your support. Thank you.
