Hi, I am Mark Cheng and am a practicing lawyer in Kuala Lumpur. What prompted me to take part in raising up funds for the orang asli children is because sometime in January this year, I volunteered to drive a number of students to Raub, Pahang for the weekend to spend some time with the orang asli children there. What I realised from that weekend is that most of these orang asli children have to leave their homes in the village at a very young age just to get an education and that all of them rarely go back to their villages to see their parents. It is such a challenge for them to get an education to which after a while, many of them give up on studying. I firmly believe that through education, these orang asli children can bring change to their respective families and also their villages. I believe that all of us can contribute in helping these orang asli children to get an education they need.  -We are a trio of churchgoers from Whispering Hope Methodist Church. Mark (whose thighs make our bak) is a lawyer by day and a person-looking-for-fun-things-to-do-with-fun-people the rest of the time. Celine (whose fried brains make our chor) is currently in fisticuffs with a neverending trail of law exams. En (whose hair is our mee) writes music for a living and wants the world to be a happy place but is often too shy to do something about it. We all care deeply for kids and believe in the importance of education, and we hope you do too! Every little contribution counts towards helping SUKA ensure their existing schools for orang asli kids stay up and running, and that makes a huge difference in the lives of these kids, who would otherwise have no access to basic education.

My name is Doen En. I've dabbled in various areas of youth & community work, but this is my first time doing anything along the lines of a charity climb/run/get-tired-and-sweaty thing. I am very big on education and firmly believe that it is more than just a basic right. We city-dwellers tend to take it for granted, while others out there who want to go to school can't, or struggle so much that school becomes just a burden! I highly encourage all those of us fortunate enough to have grown up in areas where school is normal, to do everything in our power to see that kids everywhere are recipients of the same privilege. Your contributions will go towards keeping schools for orang asli kids up and running, as well as paying the salaries of teachers employed in said schools. Please consider giving even a small amount – every ringgit counts towards a potentially big change in the lives of these kids! :)

In the end-of-year school holidays of 2012 and 2013, I facilitated an educational camp aimed to help the indigenous Sengoi school children with their studies, and these experiences have since left a deep impact in my heart. I always took my primary and secondary public school education for granted, but there are still Malaysian kids, just like us who are exponentially more disadvantaged because of circumstances beyond their very limited control. They lack of motivation even at the outset because they cannot keep up with the school syllabus taught in primary school. These kids are discriminated against (by their educators, no less!) for their lack of academic proficiency, which discourages them even more, and the vicious cycle continues to perpetuate. It makes me mad that their chances of making it through primary and secondary education are diminished not because they are academically incapable, but because they are not afforded the same chances that you and I are. I never thought that my kindergarten education made a difference but putting things into perspective, pre-school is indeed a vital launchpad for academic success in primary school and beyond. Most of us are already expected to know our ABCs, 123s, how to read and how to write by the time we enter primary school, and those who don't struggle to keep up and eventually fall behind. Thankfully most of us did attend pre-school. This is not so for the Orang Asli children. And this is what the fundraising is about.  Contributing to the education of orang asli children has been a burden I carry with me ever since. This summer, I aim to raise RM2500 (or RM7500 collectively) to empower the Orang Asli community by training up their young people to be teachers within their own community. All the donations will go toward Orang Asli pre-school classes located near Slim River, Gopeng, Gerik, Tapah and Gua Musang. I sincerely hope you will consider supporting this cause financially. It is a cause that is very close to my heart (otherwise I won't do it, I've never done anything like this before), and every donation no matter how small can make a difference. Thank you so much!
