When I was 5 years old, I attended a pre-school kinda near to my home. About 5 minutes drive maybe? When I turned 6, my mother started her job as a pre-school teacher very near my home. Just a 5 minutes walk away. She moved me to her kindergarten. To be honest, I don't remember what I learned there except how much I loved doing crafts with egg cartons and colour pencil shavings. But I did remember my first week in Standard 1 because when my teacher asked me, "Why didn't you bring your PJ clothes?". My answer? "I didn't bring bring my kettle". You see, even with two full years of pre-school education, I had no idea how to answer my teacher's question even though I understood fully what she was asking me.  For most of us, education is something we expect to be given. We went through Primary school knowing how to read, write and count. Maybe not very good at it but we sorta know our ways around it. We cannot say the same for our Orang Asli children. Many of them entered Primary school not knowing their ABCs and 123s. This puts them in a significant disadvantage and as they progresses on into Secondary school, more than 80% of the children would have dropped out before they complete Form 5. And the cycle will continue unless we do something about it.Here's where SUKA Society plugs in the gap. We believe that creating access to pre-school education in their villages by empowering Orang Asli teachers to teach will equip their children with the basic knowledge of writing, reading and counting. This enables the children to enter Primary school with the necessary skillsets. At this juncture, I would like to introduce Haini to you.Haini is a shy Temiar teacher from the interior of Gua Musang. When I first met her, she barely spoke to me. She attended her first training with us and started teaching in her village. She faced many setbacks and challenges. She even had to move her school to another village due to some complications but she persevered on. She is resilient and determined in her mission to educate her students. We invited Haini to join SUKA Society Charity Climb. It will be her first time scaling the great Mount Kinabalu. The purpose of the climb is to raise awareness as well as funds for the Orang Asli pre-school. So here I am! While she's doing the physically demanding task of reaching the peak, I am going to raise fund on her behalf. Any help is truly appreciated! Haini and I thank you in advance.

As many of you know, Me and Stiv met on Everest when we trekked to base camp in aid of a children's charity.  4 years later, we fancied another adventure! Mt. Kinabalu is the highest mountain in South East Asia - standing at 4100m, we wanted to conquer it.Here in Kuala Lumpur, I work with a charity that provides education to Malaysia's indigenous peoples - the Orang Asli. They make up only 0.5% of the population but are a diverse, engaging and culturally rich community - it's been a pleasure working with them during my time here. However, poverty remains rife within these communities, access to education is a factor in this - only 6% of Orang Asli teens graduate high school. We wanted to find a charity involved in this sector that we could climb Kinabalu in aid of.That's when we found SUKA Society, they train members of Orang Asli communities to become teachers and help them set up local schools for their children. Instead of providing quick-fix solutions to these communities, SUKA aim to train the Orang Asli to help themselves - their work is sustainable and long-term. This approach led to them being awarded the United Nations Malaysia Award 2015. We should stress that we have already paid for every part of the trip itself - flights, accommodation, guides etc. Therefore, every penny you choose to donate will go DIRECTLY to the charity and their work. So please DONATE what you can and help reach our (quite ambitious) fundraising goal!

Hi Everyone, I am taking part in the SUKA Society Charity Climb in which I will be climbing Mt Kinabalu over two days to raise funds for their pre-school centres in 3 Indigenous Villages. In Malaysia, only 6 out of 100 Indigenous children who enter school, complete their high school education. This is partly because many Indigenous children do not have access to pre-school education. Our current education syllabus begins by requiring all students to have basic reading, writing and mathematics skills, and Indigenous children who attend school without pre-school education are falling behind at the start and most fail to catch up, which eventually leads to them dropping out of school. Without access to proper education, many Indigenous communities will continue to be trapped within the vicious cycle of poverty and struggle to be self-sustainable. To help combat this problem, Suka Society launched the Empowered2Teach program in 2014. This initiative enables young children between the ages of four to six to receive early childhood education by empowering the Indigenous communities living in remote areas to run their own pre-school classes within their villages. This project supports 6 pre-school classes in the villages near Slim River, Gopeng, Gerik, Tapah and Gua Musang. This year, they are training another 10 pre-school teachers to launch pilot pre-school programs in their respective communities.   We aim to raise RM100,400 (approx. AUD33,200) in funds and sponsorships which will go towards engaging a teacher, a teaching assistant and school expenses for the existing pre-schools in Gerik, Gopeng and Gua Musang and as well as sponsorships for 60 Indigenous children. My personal target is to raise: ·       RM2,500 in funds (approx. AUD830) ·       3 x Student Sponsorships (RM840/year/student or approx. AUD280/year/student) If you would like more information about the organisation or the Empowered2Teach program, please visit the links below, or feel free to ask me 😊 Suka Society: http://www.sukasociety.org/                             Empowered2Teach program: http://empowered2teach.org/

I along with SUKA Society am supporting an access to education for Orang Asli (aborigines) children who many still do not have access to basic pre-school education as per where they are staying, far away from the existing pre-schools. Support my charity climb to hike Mount Kinabalu where we raise funds for the empowered2teach project, your contribution helps the setting up basic education (pre-schools) within their home village. I have personally volunteered and been to the pre-schools with SUKA Society, it takes time to go up and the road condition is not good. I understand that some villages still has no access to basic electricity and water. SUKA trained Orang Asli teachers in these pre-schools, thus, it helps in building foundation to the children before they start their primary education. The funds will ensure that our Orang Asli teachers have theconfidence to keep doing their best in running the pre-school classes in their respective villages: Kampung Jader, Gua Musang, Kelantan; Kampung Sungai Poh, Gopeng, Perak; Kampung Sungai Malela, Gerik, Perak. .We hope that by providing pre-school education for the children in the communities, we will help instill the desire and passion to learn from young! Thank you and have a good week!

Hi, I am Mark Cheng and am a practicing lawyer in Kuala Lumpur. What prompted me to take part in raising up funds for the orang asli children is because sometime in January this year, I volunteered to drive a number of students to Raub, Pahang for the weekend to spend some time with the orang asli children there. What I realised from that weekend is that most of these orang asli children have to leave their homes in the village at a very young age just to get an education and that all of them rarely go back to their villages to see their parents. It is such a challenge for them to get an education to which after a while, many of them give up on studying. I firmly believe that through education, these orang asli children can bring change to their respective families and also their villages. I believe that all of us can contribute in helping these orang asli children to get an education they need.  -We are a trio of churchgoers from Whispering Hope Methodist Church. Mark (whose thighs make our bak) is a lawyer by day and a person-looking-for-fun-things-to-do-with-fun-people the rest of the time. Celine (whose fried brains make our chor) is currently in fisticuffs with a neverending trail of law exams. En (whose hair is our mee) writes music for a living and wants the world to be a happy place but is often too shy to do something about it. We all care deeply for kids and believe in the importance of education, and we hope you do too! Every little contribution counts towards helping SUKA ensure their existing schools for orang asli kids stay up and running, and that makes a huge difference in the lives of these kids, who would otherwise have no access to basic education.

My name is Doen En. I've dabbled in various areas of youth & community work, but this is my first time doing anything along the lines of a charity climb/run/get-tired-and-sweaty thing. I am very big on education and firmly believe that it is more than just a basic right. We city-dwellers tend to take it for granted, while others out there who want to go to school can't, or struggle so much that school becomes just a burden! I highly encourage all those of us fortunate enough to have grown up in areas where school is normal, to do everything in our power to see that kids everywhere are recipients of the same privilege. Your contributions will go towards keeping schools for orang asli kids up and running, as well as paying the salaries of teachers employed in said schools. Please consider giving even a small amount – every ringgit counts towards a potentially big change in the lives of these kids! :)

In the end-of-year school holidays of 2012 and 2013, I facilitated an educational camp aimed to help the indigenous Sengoi school children with their studies, and these experiences have since left a deep impact in my heart. I always took my primary and secondary public school education for granted, but there are still Malaysian kids, just like us who are exponentially more disadvantaged because of circumstances beyond their very limited control. They lack of motivation even at the outset because they cannot keep up with the school syllabus taught in primary school. These kids are discriminated against (by their educators, no less!) for their lack of academic proficiency, which discourages them even more, and the vicious cycle continues to perpetuate. It makes me mad that their chances of making it through primary and secondary education are diminished not because they are academically incapable, but because they are not afforded the same chances that you and I are. I never thought that my kindergarten education made a difference but putting things into perspective, pre-school is indeed a vital launchpad for academic success in primary school and beyond. Most of us are already expected to know our ABCs, 123s, how to read and how to write by the time we enter primary school, and those who don't struggle to keep up and eventually fall behind. Thankfully most of us did attend pre-school. This is not so for the Orang Asli children. And this is what the fundraising is about.  Contributing to the education of orang asli children has been a burden I carry with me ever since. This summer, I aim to raise RM2500 (or RM7500 collectively) to empower the Orang Asli community by training up their young people to be teachers within their own community. All the donations will go toward Orang Asli pre-school classes located near Slim River, Gopeng, Gerik, Tapah and Gua Musang. I sincerely hope you will consider supporting this cause financially. It is a cause that is very close to my heart (otherwise I won't do it, I've never done anything like this before), and every donation no matter how small can make a difference. Thank you so much!

Hi, I am Enerson. I am taking part in the SUKA Charity Climb 2018 event at Mount Kinabalu on 26 July, 2018 to 29 July, 2018. SUKA Society, or Persatuan Kebajikan Suara Kanak-kanak Malaysia (SUKA) is a Non-Government-Organization that works to protect and preserve the best interest of some of the most marginalized and vulnerable people in Malaysia. SUKA Society was established in 2010, and in that relatively brief time has emerged a strong advocate for rights of those excluded from the fruits of development. This campaign is to support Orang Asli children pre-school education in Gerik, Gopeng and Slim River under SUKA Society. Currently, there are six (6) Orang Asli pre-schools under SUKA Society which is in Slim River, Gopeng, Gerik, Gua Musang and Tapah. The pre-school are providing pre-school education to more than 120 children regularly. The pre-schools have been running since 2014.  In this campaign, I'm targeting to raise fund about RM5020, which RM2500 is for pre-school expenses like teacher and assistant empower money, and another RM2520 is for securing sponsor three (3) Orang Asli children to attend pre-school for a year.

Support the SUKA society by making a donation today! Transparency matters: Funds are used to support the Empowered 2 Teach initiative that provides resources, trainings and support for the Orang Asli communities to start their own pre-school education classes within their very own villages. Every Ringgit Counts. To give you a clearer picture, Orang Asli is a collective term (which means original peoples in Malay) for some 18 ethnic groups of approximately 150,000 in total who are widely regarded as Malaysia’s first inhabitants. Up to 75% of Orang Asli children do not complete basic education. Most Orang Asli children live in remote areas where access to education is severely limited. As such, many enter primary school with little or no ability to read, write and count. This puts them at a significant disadvantage right from the start, and therefore, the Empowered 2 Teach project by the SUKA society. Plus you know how much I care about development as a whole, and how much of an adrenaline junkie I am!

Access to education is not a privilege, it's a right. And yet, many Orang Asli children still have no access to basic pre-school education as they are located deep inside far away from urbanization. Support my charity climb as hike Mount Kinabalu to raise funds for the empowered2teach project which brings basic education to communities without access to pre-schools in a sustainable way.I have visited the schools and experienced firsthand how remote some of the villages are and how tough the terrain just getting in and out the village. Some still has no access to basic electricity and water.
