I will be taking part in Hungry For Change in 14/10/2014 and aiming to raise money for Justice Centre Hong Kong Ltd Hungry for Change is Justice Centre Hong Kong campaign aimed at raising awareness for the plight faced by one of the most vulnerable and marginalized groups in HK- the refugees. I have worked at Hong Kong Refugee Advice Centre (now Justice Centre) before- it is there I heard heartbreaking stories of the persecuted, I saw men breaking down and crying in front of me because of the trauma and helplessness, and I realized that fleeing to HK is escaping from one hell to go to another hell for them. Refugees are not allowed to work in Hong Kong. Therefore, they have no money to buy their own food. The government now provides food assistance to refugees via an organization called the ISS. ISS then contact third party suppliers around the city to supply bags of food to refugees. Every 10 days (sometimes 5), refugees go to convenience stores far away from where they live to pick up a bag of food worth HK$40 per day. Sometimes the food is rotten/ has expired. And before you even doubt whether HK$40 per day is actually enough, it is noteworthy that since food is provided in kind, refugees do not even have the freedom to choose and buy their own food with HK$40 per day. Imagine living with such food for not just 3 days, but months, or even years... (a lot of asylum seekers are stuck in HK for many years...) Please help by donating to Justice Centre Hong Kong. Where will your money go? FOOD Because of the difficulties refugees face in accessing food, when they join programmes at our centre, we try to offer them and their children something to eat and drink. We currently provide some sandwiches through a partnership with Feeding Hong Kong. But demand outstrips supply. Sandwiches aren’t enough, and we are financially stretched to provide other food such as fruit and baked goods to the people we support. Your donations will helps us provide tea, coffee, fresh baked goods, fruit, biscuits and other snacks when refuges are accessing our legal and psychological support services. Refugees often travel more than an hour by public transport to our centre, and their appointment may take more than 2 hours. Then they have to travel home. Giving them and their families healthy, fresh food while we are providing legal and psychological support is an essential and valuable part of our service. ADVOCACY Real change does not happen without advocacy. At Justice Centre, we do advocacy work to try to change public policies and practices in ways that will have a positive impact on refugees’ lives. Advocacy can take place at a variety of levels from schools and local communities through to international institutions, and include diverse methods including lobbying, media work, popular campaigning (like the Hungry for Change campaign), and changing public attitudes. Dear friends, thank you for visiting my personal fundraising page. I will be taking part in Hungry For Change in 14/10/2014 and aiming to raise money for Justice Centre Hong Kong Ltd. Hungry For Change is a campaign to raise awareness for the plight of refugees and asylum-seekers in Hong Kong. Imagine if you had no cash, but only bags of food every five to ten days said to be worth HK$40 for three meals a day from which to feed yourself? How would you do it? This is how refugees are expected to eat in Hong Kong. From a meagre bag of food worth just HK$40 per day, that’s HK$13 per meal. Refugees in Hong Kong are not allowed to work, so they have no money to buy their own food. They have to pick their food up every five to ten days, pre-packaged from a grocery store that is usually far away from where they live. Sometimes the food is out-of-date; sometimes it’s rotten; always, it is limited. But we think it doesn’t have to be this way. Because in a city of plenty, no one should have to eat like this. From 14 October 2014 until the World Food Day on 16 October 2014, I will eat for HK$40 per day for 3 days to bring life to the experiences of refugees in Hong Kong. From October 14-16, I am going to spend just HK$40 a day on food to raise money for Justice Centre Hong Kong’s work with refugees. Refugees are amongst the most vulnerable people in our society. Many of them have fled the most unspeakable traumas like conflict,rape and torture in countries like Somalia, Togo, Pakistan and Syria. They come to Hong Kong often with nothing but the clothes on their back looking for protection, only to find themselves existing under a glittery skyline with no right to work, poor living conditions and facing a constant struggle to survive. As refugees cannot work to pay for their own food, the Hong Kong Government gives them pre-packaged bags of food, which they pick up every ten days from a shop often far from where they live. The food is said to be worth HK$40 per day, supposed to cover three meals per day and last for ten days. But, when we pricecompare the food they receive with food for sale in supermarkets, we see that the food they get is worth much less. Often it runs out before the ten days is up; sometimes it is expired; always it is limited in quality and quantity. From October 14-16, I am living on HK$40 for three meals per day in solidarity with Hong Kong’s refugees. A budget of HK$40 per day for food doesn’t stretch very far in Hong Kong, yet refugees have to survive on even less. Please sponsor me through this challenge so that I can raise money for Justice Centre Hong Kong’s food and advocacy programmes, and call on the government to improve the food package for refugees through this petition (https://www.change.org/p/the-hong-kong-government-let-refugees-eat-in-dignity). How much did you spend on coffee this morning? Well, a team of Linklaters staff is going to be surviving on HK40 (a little over USD5) a DAY for food and drinks for three days from 14 - 16 October. Why are they doing this?! Refugees in HK are not allowed to work so they have no way to survive whilst they await the determination of their claims other than to rely on food supplied by the government. They get a bag of food said to be worth HK40/day - however, as they are provided the actual food through food distribution centres, and not food coupons, the actual market value is even less than that. The Hungry for Change campaign is about raising awareness of the living conditions for refugees in HK, and pushing for change in the way food is provided to them. Allowing refugees to eat with dignity. So, we'll be surviving on HK40 a day, and experiencing just a little of what it is like to live like a refugee in Hong Kong. We will be raising money for Justice Centre Hong Kong, an NGO which works to support the rights of refugees and torture survivors. Please dig deep and donate, every little counts! Thank you! Hong Kong's refugees get only HK$40 a day (US$5.16) worth of food from the government. That's the price of just one meal! I've seen the rations asylum seekers get, and it is heartbreaking. That's why I am taking on Hong Kong Justice Centre's HK$40 a day challenge from October 14 to 16. For three days, I will live on whatever I can cobble together from HK$40. IN THE THIRD MOST EXPENSIVE CITY IN THE WORLD, WE WILL HAVE TO LIVE OFF HK$40 (US$5.16) A DAY, OR HK$13 (US$1.72) A MEAL, FOR FIVE DAYS!! We can't take food donations and even bottled water will count as money spent. Why are we doing this? Because the Hong Kong government only provides US$5.16 a day to refugees to spend on food, an amount that we're soon to discover is not enough for mere subsistence.
