Angkor Hospital for Children

It is my pleasure to participate in the Angkor Wat International Half Marathon for the third year running! The atmosphere of the participants and spectators will be electric as we run through the famous temple of Angkor Wat and, at Angkor Thom, the Bayon temple with its countless sculptural decorations which are world class! But more importantly, the funds raised go to supporting the Angkor Hospital for Children, a cause close to our hearts at Manulife! Decisions made easier. Lives made better.

Growing up my primary school teacher took us to a blind orphanage which also functioned as a school. Every year for the six years I lived in Egypt we went to share our toys, baked cookies and our time to sing Christmas carols together. Children’s health and education are dear to my heart and still recall with how little you can make others less fortunate smile and comfort. These children from back then have taught me a lot and I try to give back. Tomorrow I run for Children here in Cambodia, Angkor Wat. If you can, please support and shine a light with me by donating.

I started running about 5 years ago when my friend who was about the same size and built as me took on the challenge to run the full marathon. It was inspirational to me back then and I was thinking to myself, if she can do it, so can I! Along the way, I have met with many people who have discouraged me and told me that it was so difficult to complete the marathon, especially at the point of 30km mark, that would be the time where most would hit the wall and yet still have another 12km to cross. I wanted to discover for myself exactly how difficult is difficult. I didn't want to live on other people's experiences, I wanted to know how it feels like to go through it myself. Through it I have also learnt that it is very important to know how to encourage others. It doesn't matter how fast or how slow we take to cross the finishing line, what is important, is that we have crossed it. All of us have different challenges in life, it may be completing a run, it may be looking after a child, or it may be managing a difficult project. Nobody will really remember the pains that we have while going through the ordeal, at the end of the day, it is how we celebrate the completion of the task and what you are being remembered for. Today, you have a chance to make a difference to someone's life. The Angkor Wat Half Marathon aims to raise money to provide medical care for children in Cambodia (the Angkor Hospital for Children, AHC). For any small amount that you contribute, you will be able to improve the healthcare for Cambodia's children. The amount no matter how big or small touches the hearts of those who are on the receiving end, and any amount goes a long way to bring a smile onto their face.  Will you make the difference to their lives today?

After living for over four years in beautiful Cambodia, where myself and the family experienced incredible generosity and built lasting friendships, the one thing I always missed out on was running the Angkor Wat Half Marathon. As some of you know, I ran several other Half’s (Sihanoukville, Bokhor, Phnom Penh), and even a multi-day race that took me to parts I’d never imagine visiting, but due to scheduling conflicts never did the famed Angkor Wat. But I want to give forward and raise money for the Angkor Hospital for Children. An incredible charity that has made a huge difference in Cambodia. Please support by donating. It can be $100 or $1, it doesn’t matter. I want to exceed the target if I can.
