I stare out the window of the bus, the mountains seem to zoom past me in a blur. I look over at my friends, who are all getting ready to get off the bus. As we take another turn a gate comes into view. We drive under it and see students. The students are standing in the middle of a basketball court, the sun's rays shining on their faces and lighting up their smiles. They wave at us through the small openings in the bus windows. As we get off the bus, we are greeted by around thirty people, some wearing blue and white uniforms, others wearing deep green. We greet them, exchanging names and smiles. This was the last school we visited in the week of our Gansu trip, a week I will never forget. Teaching the kids was an eye-opening experience for me. Seeing their learning environment taught me to be grateful for my education and to take it seriously. When we were leaving the students were extremely upset. During this trip, I realized not to take my education for granted. I hope that the organization can continue to make these trips because collectively we have a chance to make a difference in their lives. Changing Young Lives aim to educate underprivileged girls, teaching them that they don’t have to drop out of school early, but they can finish school and get a job. Thank you Changing Young Lives for giving me this incredible opportunity to make a small change in these children's lives.

Cheerful children in brightly coloured tracksuits walk by us as our bus trudges through thick layers of waterlogged mud to go to a new village school. Smiling, these lively children chat to their friends as they make their way down the narrow mountain path, one of many that hundreds of children trek every day to get to and from school. This was a five day Gansu trip where volunteers taught English to underprivileged Chinese children at a different school each day. The five days spent in Gansu province, China, were truly a humbling experience for me when I saw how passionate they were about learning.   Throughout the course of five days, we visited three schools. At each school, we taught these lovely children some basic day to day English, such as self-introduction and how to describe the weather.  We also helped them with some art projects, as well as build lego cars. These children also chatted to me in Mandarin about themselves, their family, and their dreams.  Most of these children come from families of farmers, and have been expected to become farmers when they grow up. However, despite these expectations, most of the young children I talked with have dreams far beyond farming. Some want to be doctors, lawyers, firefighters, etc. They are all willing to work hard to achieve their dreams. These children inspire me, that despite their poverty, they possess hope and determination. Despite living in one of the more rural parts of China, where the majority of the population are farmers, they still have their dreams. Dreams just like you and I have. However, because of their limited financial resources, they need a helping hand, your helping hand. After all, as Edith Piaf, the famous singer, once said, “When you reach the top, you should remember to send the elevator back down for the others.”   I feel so grateful to have met all these wonderful children, and I need your help to help them.  The generous donation that you make today will impact hundreds of young lives and change them for the better. These young lives will further  improve the lives of their families, relatives, and the villages where they live.  Thank you for your generous donation.

Once again, I went on a voluntary service trip to Gansu (甘肅), China this Summer with Studio 83 on behalf of Changing Young Lives Foundation. During our one week’s time visit, we visited children from the Spring Blossom program and an underprivileged primary school (大樹小學) in Dongxiang, teaching them simple english as well as elements of arts. We adjusted our english program from last year and instead taught them simpler vocabulary and self introductory skills. All of these children are very passionate learners, and would take any opportunity to better their education. We have visited some of these children in the past years, knowing that they recognized me and seeing their faces light up when we arrived was an unforgettable experience. After visiting the same village for the third time, I could see the progressive change that these children and their schools have undergone. The girls from the Spring Blossom Program were a lot more confident and positive. One of the girls that I kept in contact with (through the pen pal program established last year) even made me a bracelet to show her gratitude. The schools and their facilities were better built and more hygienic. I would like to thank anyone who have supported my fundraising pages in the past years. Your support has significantly helped the children and the village. I hope to further help these children by setting up another fundraising page, which will continue to support the development of the “Spring Blossom” scholarship program. This year our target is to raise HK$350,000 to support 200 Dongxiang boys and girls to continue their studies for another year, and I personally hope to reach a goal of $50,000. There is so much more that you and I can do to help these children. No matter the amount, your donations will definitely make a difference for them, making Dongxiang a better place to call home. Thank you for all the help!

Dear beloved friends and family,I’ve been there, I’ve taught there and I believe that these studious young ladies deserve an education more than we do. Instead, most of them face the fate of an arranged marriage at the age of 11. Your generous support would serve as compensation to incentivise their families to allow them to leave the house and attend school. Act now and give these ladies a better shot at life! I would be forever in debt of your generosity and kindness.Jayden

This year is my third consecutive summer visiting the remote Dong Xiang county 东乡县 in Gansu province 甘肃省 to teach school children. Since 2017, I met the same kids grow physically and intellectually. I love seeing the students laughing and playing, but feel sad that they lack many necessities, like warm clothing and shoes are often torn. They also don't get to shower regularly due to lack of running water in their villages.  At these village schools, we taught them simple English, did artwork, worked on Lego cars, and even danced together - it was so satisfying yet humbling to see the children's eye lit up and enjoying these activities.   In Gansu, high school education is a luxury to many, especially girls who are often neglected and forced to marry at an early age.  This year we met the Scholarship recipients and their parents and they were enormously touched and appreciative of the support Changing Young Lives Foundation (CYLF) has provided to them.  I am appealing to you to help us continue to build the Spring Blossom Scholarship Program so that the more kids can stay in school in Gansu province.   With your generous donations, we can make it happen! Thank you.

On the 25th of June myself and a group of other kids, along with a few of their parents, and members of the CYLF, embarked on a trip to Gansu. For some of them it has already been the third year they have travelled to this province and visited these schools, but for me it was the first. It was made clear to me from the beginning that these children need help, especially the girls who have been living in a discriminatory society, and one of our jobs, other than teaching them what we could in the time we had, was to help them see the light. For all three schools we visited their parents were shown a video urging them to allow their girls to attend school for a little longer, as this time spent learning could change their futures for the better. We also spoke to the girls themselves hoping to inspire them to work hard and aim for a brighter future, but I found that they did not need persuasion. They were more than determined to learn and work, and most of them already know what they want to be when they grow up. Perhaps the most touching moment (of many) I had was when one of the girls I was teaching English to told me that she wanted to be "just like us". At fist I didn't understand, but after some broken Chinese and hand gesturing I realized she was trying to tell me she wanted to be a volunteer, and help children who were in an even lesser situation than she was. All of the girls I spoke to wanted only to help other people. They are all so selfless and grateful for the help we gave them, and this was apparent in the way they interacted with us. Without having to use actual words they convinced me that what this foundation is trying to do is actually working, and is appreciated. It would mean so much to them to have a few helping hands, to contribute towards their education, which will definitely benefit their lives in the long run.
