Although the standard of living is steadily improving, Cambodians continue to suffer from widespread poverty across the country. Many of the preventable illnesses suffered by children are symptoms of this deep-rooted poverty: everything from lack of decent shelter, clean water and nutritious food make it difficult for children to thrive.   I am cycling to make a change and improve healthcare for Cambodia’s children. Please donate to help me reach my fundraising target… Every donation, no matter how small really does count!

Angkor Hospital for Children

This will be the fourth time I’m doing the Bike4Kids charity ride in Siem Reap, Cambodia. It would be hard for me to pass up a chance to bike through the magnificent Angkor Wat Temple complex and to be doing it for a good cause; raising money for Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) and the poor children the hospital serves.   This will be my 16th volunteer trip to AHC. Following my 24 hour flight, I’ll arrive in Siem Reap the day before the ride. I’ll try to get myself organized, get some rest and be ready for the start of the 100km ride at dawn.   I’m riding to support the great work that the Cambodian staff of AHC does in providing high quality healthcare for the children of Cambodia. Families often travel long distances to reach AHC. They know they will receive compassionate care for their child, provided by AHC’s highly trained staff.   I hope you’ll support me in this effort. I hope to raise $1000 for AHC and all donations are greatly appreciated. I’ll start the “wheels rolling” with my donation. Please be generous and remember that $100 goes very far in Cambodia, it will cover the cost of outpatient visits for over 20 children.   Thanks for your support.

Angkor Hospital for Children

I will be running a half marathon (not sure why I didn't sign up to the 10km option) on 3rd December in the Cambodian heat to hopefully raise some money for this amazing cause.Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) is an independent, non-profit paediatric healthcare organisation located in Siem Reap, Cambodia. AHC’s mission is to improve healthcare for all of Cambodia's children by creating a sustainable, replicable model of a healthcare institution in cooperation with the Cambodian government.1 out of every 29 children born in Cambodia will die before his or her fifth birthday–one of the highest child mortality rates in the region. Many of the 170,000 treatments provided each year at Angkor Hospital for Children are for preventable illnesses. Poverty is a root cause of a majority of the most commonly seen illnesses at Angkor Hospital for Children: lack of clean drinking water, malnutrition and low prevalence of good sanitation and hygiene practices all contribute to preventable child illness and death. Since opening, AHC has provided over two million medical treatments, education to thousands of Cambodian health workers and health education to thousands of families. On average, 500 children and their families come to the hospital each day. Please do sponsor me if you can, so that AHC can continue to make a difference to so many lives.I hate running, so this is a big deal for me. I'm also not that keen on the heat, so not sure how this will work out. Donations of any size are welcomed!Thank you!!!Xxx

Angkor Hospital for Children

I have worked at AHC for about 2 years. No so long compared to some staff. It didn't take me long to realise how special the hospital is. The children are treated with kindness and compassion. Over 500 children come to AHC everyday looking for medical care. They might need to see a dentist, an outpatient pediatrician, the ophthalmologist or need urgent ICU care.  We also have social work, physio, ER/ICU, two In patient wards, Neonatal ward and breast feeding consultants. An  average of 540 patients are admitted a month. All the medical and nursing professionals are ably supported by an incredible non medical staff including purchasing and logistics units, registration, maintenance, drivers, security staff, cleaners and finance unit. So many people work together to make sure 100s of children receive care every day and the burden and insecurity of lack of health care services are removed from their families.

Angkor Hospital for Children

Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) is an amazing organisation that provides quality, compassionate healthcare to over 180K children every year - all for free.  A teaching hospital training the next generation of Cambodia's healthcare workers, with outreach programs that focus on the most remote parts of the community and centers of excellence like the countries first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, AHC is doing ground breaking work to improve healthcare for all of Cambodia's children. It is so much more than a hospital. We have been lucky enough to call Cambodia home for over 2 years and have witnessed first hand the impact AHC has on the community, with Max working in the fundraising and events team for the past 12 months. The team at AHC work hard every day to provide healthcare for children who might not otherwise have access to qualified medical professionals, nutritional experts and support services, but all of this comes at a price. And with a $6.5M budget to raise every year this is no small feat! Here's how your donation can help... US$15        A trip to the dentist for one childUS$25        School health and nutrition classes for 20 primary age school studentsUS$50        Three counselling sessions for victims of abuse or neglectUS$75        24 hours of inpatient treatment and care for a severely malnourished childUS$100      Sight-saving eye screenings for 20 childrenUS$250      24hr lifesaving intensive care for one premature baby in our Neonatal Intensive Care UnitUS$500      Care for a child living with HIV for one whole yearUS$750      Cost of one heart surgery for a child born with heart defectsUS$1,000   Curative oncology treatment for one child with cancer of the eye We will be running in the Angkor Wat International Half Marathon this December to help raise life saving funds for AHC. Every donation will make a difference, please give big and help us reach our fundraising goal of $5,000! Thank you, Max & Robert

1 out of every 29 children born in Cambodia will die before his or her fifth birthday–one of the highest child mortality rates in the region. Our team has members from all the non-medical units at Angkor Hospital for Children. This includes Finance, Purchasing, Logistics, House Keeping, Security, IT, HR, Drivers, Maintenance and Registration. We do not provide care but we are behind the scenes in all aspects of the hospital. We know how important it is that medical supplies are on hand, that the ventilators are working properly, the floors are cleaned and the right patient file is ready for the appointment. We work tirelessly to make sure the hospital is clean, and that hygiene standards are maintained. We guard the gates to make sure the children are safe and queues are orderly. We make sure the electricity is on and the water is running otherwise so many other parts of the hospital just do not work! We negotiate with suppliers for the best prices. We work so hard every day but this year we are going an extra kilometre or 10 to try to raise money to help support our hospital and the amazing work done here. Many of the 170,000 treatments provided each year at Angkor Hospital for Children are for preventable illnesses.
