The past twelve months I've batted off skin cancer, prostate cancer and a flesh eating bacterial infection that tried to do my right leg in (yes really - look up necrotising faciitus).  I was pretty unfit before those annoying distractions became a great excuse to avoid all physical exercise for much of this year! This charity challenge trek is in part to prove to myself I'm not yet ready for the scrap heap, and more importantly to raise money for a fantastic conservation project that is improving our lives in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is my home and gives me much pleasure to live here. It's good to be able to give something back, and challenge myself while trying to do so. I have the privilege of knowing you, and if you are able to support Conservation International due to my huffing and puffing in the Himalayas I will be most grateful.

Join me on my mission to harmonise community sustainability and freshwater conservation and in protecting nature by supporting a community-based stewardship in the Dongjiang basin. As the major water source for over 40 million people in the basin and Hong Kong, the Dongjiang river’s health is critical to the sustainable development of the region. With growing population and pollution, water security is being challenged and the freshwater ecosystem degrading. Meanwhile, local communities in the upstream water source areas have been scarifying development opportunities cost water resource conservation. Within a favourable policy environment which prioritises ecological civilisation, there is an urgent need and good opportunity to promote community-based stewardship in important water source areas for the benefit of both local communities and regional water security. The project proposed aims to harmonise community sustainability and freshwater conservation through demonstrating community-based stewardship in rural water source areas of the Dongjiang basin. The ultimate goal is to safeguard Dongjiang freshwater ecosystem health for regional sustainable development. Output 1. A small-scale constructed wetland to treat domestic sewage is demonstrated.   Constructed wetland is featured with stable performance in domestic sewage purification, low cost for construction and maintenance, and flexibility in location and size. It has been demonstrated one of the most suitable wastewater treatment techniques for scattered rural communities. The project is to build a small-scale constructed wetland to treat wastewater for a farmhouse restaurant or a small cluster of households in a selected village.  Key activities Community investigation and engagement. Conduct environmental-social-economic studies of targeted villages. Consult local stakeholders and gain local support for the project. Design of constructed wetlands. Construction of Wetlands and supporting facilities.Monitor performance of the constructed wetland.Maintain effective operation of the constructed wetland. Output 2. Local community is educated and engaged in water stewardship  Through a participatory approach, this output is designed to raise awareness of the targeted community, foster local capacity to maintain water environment and educate people. In the process, supports from the civil society and private sector are to be leveraged through volunteering activities based on needs of the project.  Key activities Conduct environmental education and promote the idea of water conservation in targeted community;Train and compensate selected villagers to build, monitor and maintain the constructed wetland;Engage and train volunteer environmental educator in the community. Initiate a volunteering program with corporate partner to investigate and analysis environmental-social-economic status of targeted villages.   Although budget is limited, the project will seek opportunities to utilize existing public utilities of the village and create a multi-functional space for residents and visitors. If established, this common space will serve as an environmental education center for visitors, a common leisure space for villagers, and a library for school kids.   4. Cost Cost of the proposed project is estimated to be 500,000 HKD

A few months ago, I volunteered to be part of the Himalayas Trek to raise money for protecting clean water sources. I am never a keen hiker but will soon be embarking on an ambitious trail high on the altitudes of the Himalayas spanning over 75km over 5 days. I have been doing some basic training over the last few weeks but probably not enough. No excuses now, I am doing it again.A once in a lifetime opportunity to take on this challenge and what a better way to do this with 70 other challengers all for a good cause. Please sponsor me as part of this fantastic initiative and for a charitable cause.I hope I can survive the altitude of this trek!

This September, we are trekking through the Himalayas and raising money for Conservation International and WaterAid.  Clean, accessible drinking water is often seen as a normal part of everyday life. But with growing population and pollution, this water security is being challenged. Right now in the Dongjiang river regions, domestic sewage continues to be released into the environment without proper treatment, putting direct pressure on source waters.  People need nature - the Dongjiang basin serves as a major water source for over 40 million residents of nearby villages and the entire city of Hong Kong, with a population of more than 7 million people. The funds raised will be used by Conservation International, an NGO that protects nature by finding sustainable solutions, to support a community-based stewardship in the Dongjiang basin. They are providing environmental education to residents and implementing rural sewage treatments. Ultimately, your donation can help us conserve humanity’s most precious resource.

This September, I will join 69 other KPMG colleagues and HSBC executives on a HSBC/KPMG Challenge Himalayas 2019 to trek 75 km through the spectacular landscapes of the Himachal Pradesh region in the Indian Himalayas, all whilst raising money for Conservation International and WaterAid. By donating, not only can you support the participants on their 4-day trek through the mountains of the Himalayas, you will also be contributing to harmonizing community sustainability and freshwater conservation in the Dongjiang region. Ultimately, your donation can help us conserve humanity’s most precious resource.
