Abby, Charmaine, Jessica, Colin and I will be representing APAC Legal trekking in the Indian Himalayas to fundraise for Mind HK.We will be joining a team of 52 people from Barclays across Asia Pacific on a 4 day trek covering 75 kilometres.I am feeling nervous about the journey ahead and am expecting it to be challenging, humbling and inspiring. I am sure that the aches, pains and lack of creature comforts that we face on our journey will be nothing compared to the struggle that so many people who live with mental illness have to live with every day. Please support me and Mind HK by donating to the cause. Thank you in advance for your support, I am truly grateful.

Hello everyone,   In two weeks, I will be embarking on a 4-day trek through the Himalayas in the Himachal Pradesh region of Northern India with a team of Barclays Asia Pacific colleagues to collectively raise awareness and funds for mental health and wellbeing.   Mental health and wellbeing has been an issue close to my heart. You might think of depression and anxiety, but it is also dementia and insomnia. ADHD and autism. Eating disorders and substance abuse. There are no official statistics on legal professionals, but I don’t know a lawyer who does not have at least one of the above.   According to the WHO, mental disorders affect 1 in 4 people worldwide. That’s 450 million people. Of this 450 million, 2 out of 3 never seek professional help, for fear of stigma and discrimination. That’s 300 million people.   Mental disorders can be prevented. They can be treated. They can be overcome.   Yet there is an awareness gap, a legislative gap, and a funding gap.   I ask that you help me with this. Help me raise funds that will go towards bridging these gaps. Barclays will be matching your donations, pound for pound, up to GBP 1,000, per fundraiser. All your donations will go towards the wonderful work that Mind HK does for mental health and wellbeing in Hong Kong. I thank you on behalf of all the children and adults who will benefit from your generosity.   Thank you, Charmaine

It is 2019, and this year for New Year's I decided to do a bit more than just vow that I would exercise more, eat less and sleep more.  I thought I also needed to devote more of my energy to a greater good.  Then an opportunity came around from Barclays - Mind over Mountains - trek 75 kilometres (46.6 miles!) in the Himalayas and raise money for a good cause, MindHK.  This will be a challenge, physically and mentally.  Those who know me well, know that I like to hike, but I have not trekked, ever, and I have not camped in a very long time (not even sure I can count the years).  I have collected and bought a bunch of gear that prior to this trip, I knew little about.  I am still not entirely sure I know how to use all of it, and there may be some interesting learning experiences ahead! I imagine over the course of the trek, I will learn many more things about myself and my friends and colleagues that I never knew or appreciated.  Recently, I have been reflecting on just how short life can be and how much time I spent when I was younger being selfish, or unhappy, or immature.  It is hard to say that was time wasted because I learned some important lessons and going through that made me who I am.  One lesson I reflect back on is that life can present obstacles and those obstacles can have very little to do fairness or what you deserve.  People get sick and that sickness can rob you of precious time.  That sickness can be physical or it can be mental, or both.  We often focus on the physical illness and we need to, but that should not be at the expense of focusing on the mental illnesses and challenges.  Those can profoundly impact health, wellness and enjoyment of life.  To flip this around - no challenge or action is only a physical challenge - certainly for me, physical challenges are often just as much physical as mental and if I am mentally unhappy, it can and does actually show (and vice versa).  Being a mother of a toddler, I not only focus much more on my own health (to keep up with her!), and my daughter's health - physical, mental, social, etc. - but also on the health of the world around her - the people, animals, plants, and things that surround her.  We are not islands and each of us can and do impact each other and sometimes in very profound ways.  There should not be a stigma attached to mental health, generally, or with challenges and illnesses.  Being able to speak openly about mental health and access resources can help people better spend their time for themselves, their loved ones and their colleagues, and the world around us - pets, plants and animals (including even my felines who may begrudgingly admit that life is better when their cat mommy is happy).  So help me raise money while I trek up some mountains and help destimgatise mental health!

I am partnering with Just Challenge to participate in the Mind Over Mountains programme aiming to challenge the stigma around mental health and break the culture of silence that often surrounds this problem. The challenge provides an incredible opportunity for me to meet new people from across, experience the culture and beauty of the Indian Himalayan mountains and push myself outside of my comfort zone. The goal will be to cover 80km over a 4 day period. Why: Mental HealthMental illnesses are among the leading causes of disabilities around the world, with depression being the third. 1 in 5 adults experience mentalillness, accounting for 15% of the total global burden of disease and what’s truly important from a global health point of view is that the vast majority of these individuals do not receive the care that we know can transform their lives – care that over and above medical and psychological treatment, includes social intervention. What: Mind Over MountainsMind Over Mountains is a four-day trekking challenge in the Himalayas designed to help remove the stigma around mental health.
