The onset of the South-west monsoon brought on a tropical cyclonic storm causing strong winds, heavy rainfall and landslides since 25th May 2017, particularly affecting the South, Southwestern and Western regions of Sri Lanka. The deadly cyclone referred to as ‘Cyclone Mora’ has devastated many parts of Sri Lanka causing the worst floods in the island since 2003, forcing thousands of people to leave their homes and seek shelter in local schools, community spaces, churches and Government District offices.
As of May 31, 2017, the severe weather conditions have affected 631,346 people and 164,264 families in 15 districts across Sri Lanka.1 Over the past few days, 202 people have been killed by the severe floods and landslides with more than 96 people still missing. Over 1,500 houses have been fully destroyed, 7,617 houses partially damaged and 77,643 people are temporarily displaced in 368 safe locations. Matara, Kalutara, Galle and Rathnapura remain the worst affected districts.
