Personal Challenge

I am running for the two passions in my life. Please help me raise funds for Women's Aid Organisation in conjunction with my amma's 90th birthday!!

My Story

I have two passions in my life; my mother and women’s rights and oh ok, food too! On Sunday, 17 August, my mother turns 90 years old. My Amma, Harriet Ponmalar Josiah has her wits about her, loves her Tamil dramas, still cooks for us and worries for our safety every time we drive out or fly overseas. Amma has nourished me both physically and emotionally for 59 years. To demonstrate my love and admiration for her I want to do something heroic, something challenging. Yup! I am running a 5km run! Now, most of you know that I am couch potato and will retreat to my sofa with a good book or a TV programme munching on keropok. So, running or in my case jogging slowly for 5 km is a huge deal. The 17th of August is Amma’s birthday when I will take part in The Colour Run, an un-timed race that is also known as the "Happiest 5k on the Planet" celebrating healthiness, happiness and individuality. So, thank you Amma for giving me the strength to take my body to a new place and thank you too Amma for supporting my other passion. I have been working for women’s rights especially on the right to be protected from domestic violence for almost 31 years. It still makes me angry when a woman is abused, beaten, kicked and choked, it makes us all angry when access to protection is still so weak in our country. I want to do more for these women and their children. I will not be silenced when children have to watch their father beat their mother. I believe that the work of the social workers in Women’s Aid Organisation - the women’s group that opened Malaysia’s first shelter for battered women and their children - is critical, irreplaceable and absolutely necessary. Your donation will make sure that WAO's doors and telephone counselling lines remain open, to make sure that police do their work, to make sure that women are supported in court, to make sure that women can turn to WAO social workers for comfort and protection. So please donate to honour my mother's 90th birthday and my efforts to make sure WAO is sustainable. WAO needs 1 million Ringgit per year! Through simplygiving.com you can make safe and secure donations to sponsor me. The proceeds of your support will be sent to my charity and are tax exempted. Ivy Josiah
