Dear Relatives & Friends, I am a YMCA of Singapore volunteer and I will be participating in the upcoming Y Camp Challenge from 15 to 18 December 2011. Organised quarterly by YMCA of Singapore, Y Camp Challenge is an outdoor adventure camp designed to help build self-confidence and impart important life-skills to the intellectually and physically challenged. Along with 140 other volunteers, we will each be paired with a fellow camp participant with special needs. As camp buddies, we will face together, hand-in-hand, side-by-side, various adventure activities such as high ropes elements, water obstacles courses and a host of camp craft activities over the 4D3N camp. As individuals who are privileged to be in the pink of health, we can never fathom the arduous mental and physical challenges and the utter vexation that our friends with special needs face every day. The inability to move or act according to one’s own free undoubtedly takes a heavy toll on the mind over time, and despondency and abjection complete the misery by slowly eroding the confidence and will to live. However, this camp has the potential to overturn all self-conceived limitations by the intellectually and physically challenged and transform their lives forever. As our friends with special needs experience moments of triumph and a sense of achievement by conquering physical obstacles at the camp, self-confidence is seeded. Hope is restored, spirits are lifted. To defray some expenses of organising the camp, it costs $100 each for a volunteer and special needs camp participant to join Y Camp Challenge. I am therefore doing my very best to help raise the funds for both a special needs camp buddy and myself to attend the camp.
