My Story

I’m hoping to raise for fund for the surgery and possible chemo therapy of my 8 monthd old daughter. She was diagnosed of Congenital Heart Defects (VSD, PDA, PFO) when she was just 5 days old as confirmed by her pedia-cardio thru 2D echo. We take care of her very carefully considering her heart conditions. She did not presented any untoward sign and symptoms for her heart condition and we’re hoping that it will close eventually as she grows old. But then, we were shocked that on March 12, she started vomiting and have had LBM. She had high grade fever with temp reaching 40.6 C as the highest. Fortunately, she never had any seizure which can damage her brain. We observed her condition then we decided to bring her to the nearest secondary hospital on March 14. There, they assesed her and admitted  with focus on treating her vomiting, LBM and fever. A chest APL xray was done to her and revealed that she has pneumonia, left lobe with pleural effusion. The treatment was focused on treating her pneumonia and effusion. There were episodes that her O2 saturation went down to 80s, her cardiac rate to 70s and her respiration to 80s. We were alarmed about here condition. Antibiotics were shifted to higher level from Ampicillin to Ceftazidime and Amikacin that were shifted as well to Piperacillin Tazobactam (vigocid). Different nebulizations were used (salbutamol, budesonide, salbu+iprat) and corticosteroid iv meds were given as well.
Her fever was gone and her attending physician finally decided to discharge her with Pneumonia High risk diagnosis. She was discharged on March 22 (almost 9 days being admitted in the hospital).
We taught that she will be ok now because we will continue her IV meds at home through her heplock.
That night of March 22, she had episodes again of high grade fever with temp reaching to 38.5 C.  We decided to contact her AP and requested to repeat her CBC in the morning. Suddenly, we met our ninang sa kasal who happens to be a pediatric doctor also and Medical director of a private hospital as well. She was shocked about my daughter’s condition, checked her lungs and extremities. She noted that Elize is hardly breathing and with signs of hypoxia. She suggested to bring her immediately to a higher level hospital to address her condition. We rushed her to St. Paul hospital the moment she told us to bring her immediately.
At St. Paul hospital, she was treated with the focus on alleviating her dyspnea. Different types of blood test (CBC, ABG, blood culture) and diagnostic imaging (chest xray APL) were done immediately to Elize.  Her WBC:27+ and her Platelet:1116 (maybe a sign of sepsis). Her ABG: respiratory alkalosis. chest xray: pneumonia with pleural effusion and consolidation at her left lungs.
Her AP suggested to refer her to an oncologist. A chest CT scan was requested (10k) that same night of her admission. Actions were very quick considering her condition. She was referred to a cardio-pedia also considering her history of CHD.
Repeat 2D echo was done and we’re very thankful that all abnormal holes in her heart were already closed. A great relief for us that het pneumonia did not affected her heart even she had episodes of bradycardia.
The result of Chest CT scan with contrast medium revealed that Elize have an anterior mediastinal mass probably thymoma vs teratoma.
Elize was crying most of the time especially even after a mild and slight cough.. maybe it’s because of the pain that she is experiencing due to that mass. She was being sedated through IV meds atleast every 8hours in order to alleviate her suffering caused by pain.
Her 3 attending physicians worked hand in hand together addressing all the presenting signs and symptoms maybe due to that mass.
All of the 3 AP suggested that she must be brought to a higher level of surgical facility in Manila to undergo surgery of removing and biopsy of that mass. They told us that it must be removed because it maybe the cause of her condition especially the pleural effusion on her lungs. They suggested to donit in Heart Center.
Our hearts as parents was broken into pieces. We don’t know what to do after hearing that suggestions of her 3 AP. They requested repeat CBC and it revealed that her infection was still high and her hemoglobin suddenly dropped down to 8 g/dL. Stat blood transfusion was initiated. I ran to CVMC to retrieve the blood requested for Elize. While riding in a tricycle goind to CVMC, my mind was floating and I can’t do anything but to Cry. Waiting for the blood, still crying and asking myself, why Elize on her very young age.
I kept thinking and thinking and telling to myself how and why. why she has to suffer this type of condition. why she need blood transfusion. why me as her father can’t give her the quality care as a nurse I used to give to my patients. why me as a sharp shooter in IV therapy failed to insert IV cath to her veins in 1 shoot that most of the time I used to do with my patients. why I can’t advise and calm myself during this situation that I used to do in comforting my patients ans their relatives. why I don’t have enough resources and money to support her needs and hospitalization..
all i can do is tonask why and why and how and how...
Due to burst of mg feelings, I decided to post it on facebook hoping to alleviate what I’m feeling that time.
My colleagues, friends, old classmates, relatives and all the people who read my post tried to reach me and offer their help and support.
I was overwhelmed by their efforts to help and support me and my family in this situation.
Some referred to us to surgeons in Manila which we contacted.
We are hopeful that lots of friends and relatives will help us through this journey of our intertion to cure Elize.
The 3 AP decided to discharge Elize and advised and referred us to go immediately to Manila to our hospital of choice considering our Financial status.
Due to donations that we received, we were able to clear our hospital bills at st. Paul on March 28.
Our plan is to travel on March 30 (Saturday) to Manila and aiming to get access in PGH for the possible surgery and chemo of Elize. As of now, we don’t have any resources or enough money to go to manila but because of our hope that Elize will be cured their, we have to take the risk.
In this journey, we really need your help and support through prayers and Financial support.
It will be a great a challenge to us to raise atleast 500k-600k for her hospitalization.
I hope to reach your heart and help us.
May God Bless you all.
Lord, let Your will be done!!!!

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.
