My Story

I am a stage 4 thyroid cancer survivor. Just four years ago, when my doctor first said to me: “Unfortunately, it is cancer”, my instantaneous reply was “I still want to live.” Yes, to me then, cancer equals death. Three surgeries, two radioactive iodine treatments and heaps of cancer articles later, I now know that cancer does not necessarily equal death. It is an illness that can be treated if one chooses to believe in the power of science and medicine, and then collaborate with doctors and nurses. The most powerful for me, was choosing to receive all the love and support around me, and giving my all to overcome and get well, so that I can continue to live a life that is just as full, if not fuller, than my life before diagnosis. Today, I am very much alive, and am joining Race Against Cancer as a way of giving thanks for life, and paying tribute to my family, friends, doctors and nurses for walking alongside with me. Most of all, it is my way of supporting cancer patients who are in the race for survival right now, and letting them know that they are not alone in this battle.
